I've only just started mine - apparently (going on books not experience!) if you can leave them a bit later than normal then the carrot fly don't have chance to lay their eggsCould this be what's caused the problem with yours?
I think it's slugs...they don't get far enough to attract carrot fly! This year I weighted down fleece over the sowed carrot seed, and waited...nothing. Still nothing! Didn't sow very early, either. I think I just made a bad job of the fleece and probably the slugs got the seedlings before I had a chance to spot them!...OR, perhaps I'm just being impatient and they haven't come up yet? I lose track, but I'm sure it's been about six weeks or more!0 -
Does anyone grow asparagus? I have 6 plants, they won't be ready for another year, can anyone tell me how many spears I can expect per plant...they are producing 3 each so far0

My courgette plant has a flower on it :j I'm so excited I had to tell everyone

Oh, each plant produces lots! We had 3 plants last year and couldn't eat them quickly enough. They should really get going this month, provided we have some sun and a little rain now & then ... just overnight rain, mindWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

Excellent news! Some flowers will result in a courgette, others won't - it's the difference between male and female, though I can't remember the specifics! The flower will only last a day or so, and soon after you'll be able to see if there's the start of a tiny courgette behind it, or whether it was just a flower...but all being well it should be the first of many flowers on your plant, and many fruits!0 -
Re the above, female flowers are the ones that produce the fruits - if you look at the stalk behid the flower there should be a slight swelling. This is the baby fruit. Male flowers don't have it.
Some people pull off the male flowers, some leave them on. I think its kind of up to you.
And as said above, each flower gives one fruit, but the whole plant will give you many. I've got a plant in a pot outside my kitchen door - still waiting for it to give me a flower though.
(and has anyone tried battered couorgette flowers? Meant to be delish.)
MethererNot heavily in debt, but still trying to sort things out.

I've had courgette flowers, not battered but stuffed with goats cheese and deep fried. They were really nice, I was surprised.
This year I have planted carrots, french beans, raddishes, cucumber and strawberries. All in pots but the slugs and snails and black fly are already muching their way through them
Have also got oregano, chives, basil, mint, sage and thyme which are all thriving in pots.
