GiffGaff - good or bad?

  • I'm on giffgaff and I find them generally very good. If you're on already 02 then you'll have no problems with signal as giffgaff are part of the same company. You won't need to unlock your phone either.

The best part is that there's no contract. If you decide you're not happy then you can just switch to another network at the end of the month.

It's worth going onto the giffgaff community and having a look to see if that style of communication suits you. There are no call centres so you have to go online to sort out any problems - that's not everyone's cup of tea!

Personally I haven't had any major problems. A couple of times I've lost internet for an hour or so but they may well have been planned outages. Giffgaff do post warnings when something like that is planned but, again, you have to go online and actively check to know it's going on.

The major bonus is that it's very affordable and flexible!

Oh and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but whilst they use the O2 network they aren't exactly 'part of O2'. :)

Ok, I'll correct you, cos you're wrong :)
It's a mobile business owned by O2 but run like a start-up in a beautiful converted building. Our vibrant online community is key to our success. The idea is this: you do something for the business and we give you something back. Like free air-time in return for marketing. Hence the name 'giffgaff', which is ye olde Scottish for mutual giving.

  • I ported from Three to GiffGaff (losing an excellent retention deal) and am still regretting it. Their 3G coverage is poor compared to Three (I run an iPad2 on Three and often get a 3G signal where it is just 2G on my phone).

The actual phone/data service on Giffgaff has performed flawlessly for me - but if you want support you have to accept that you will have to resort to the forums where lots of teenagers race to post badly worded suggestions to win cash payback (to the point I have abandoned the online community altogether).

Since there are no commitments you could try it out for yourself - it's an even better deal if you are a heavy texter or data users since there are no limits (assuming you can get a 3G signal!).

    We love it!
We are all on Giffgaff here.
£10 month goody bags get us unlimited data, unlimited text and 250min call time, so my teenagers can't run up any bills and can't ever give the excuse of "can't call home got no credit" as giffgaff to giffgaff calls and texts are free.

Never had a problem, but have used the forums for help when setting up new phones, brilliant!
