Refunding onto same payment card

Hello,

what is the crack with stores only refunding onto the same card an item was pair for on?

It's never really been an issue for me as such, but today had to return an item I paid for on my card, but as my wallet went missing last week, I don't have any cards at the moment, never mind the same one!

They refused to refund it to me - well, settled for gift card in the end, as it wasn't faulty and will use the store fairly often.

But where do you stand with this - particularly if it's faulty? Want to get my facts right before I come across this again!

Stores will refund to the same card as the purchase was made on as this payment is traced at the payment processor and any associated fees to the original transaction are refunded to the retailer, also if proves that you are the original purchaser
  • I think it might also be something to do with stopping people using one credit card to pay off another.
The credit card companies get really annoyed if a shop refunds an amount onto a card that wasn't used for purchasing an item - they threaten to suspend the account over it.

I returned an 81p item to the supermarket yesterday and had to have THAT refunded to my debit card. Must be some banking regulation.

*waits to see if anyone enlightens her*

Mind you someone who bought an e bay item from me wanted a refund but wanted it paid into her partners account as 'she wouldn't be able to get the money' if I refunded to hers (presumably hers is 'overdrawn or something') - had I done that she could have claimed I'd never made the refund and I could have ended up refunding twice!

Yeah, i get the reasons why they would *want* to do it this way - I just wonder, from a legal / rights side of things whether they're allowed to refuse to refund another way - as far as I'm aware, consumer law states that proof of purchase is all that is required - not proving *who* made the purchase.

I've had refunds from shops who are strict about this but also from shops who say it doesn't matter and will refund to any card in my name. If there were serious issues involved, why would some shops be so laid back about it?

The shop can do it to another card eg if the old card has expired and been destroyed or the card has been lost stolen.

That's what the receipt is for.

But that has nothing to do with the store.

Doesn't help though when your entire wallet has been stolen and haven't had any replacements through yet though

Neither of which would be an issue if refunding in cash :D
