Pizza Hut adding money to bill without asking

Options
Yesterday I went to my local Pizza Hut restaurant and saw that an additional 15p had been added to my bill for a 'cup of rice'. I queried this with the waitress and she told me that from around September 2011 it was Pizza Hut's policy to automatically add 15p to every bill in order to prevent world hunger. The 15p is even added to takeaway orders and even if the customer bought just a fizzy drink. How many people have realised this is going on because this has never been advertised through the media and the only advertising Pizz Hut provides is a small advert which they keep next to the till and not on the tables so that customers have the right to decline if they need to.

If you can afford to eat a pizza at Pizza Hut, 15p won't break the bank.

Pizza Hut is a rip off; £21 for a pizza (and they throw a "free" one in for that) duh...just charge a tenner in the first place

Because Piza Hut are going to reap all the good publicity when the money is handed over, at minimal cost to themselves. Why can't they knock 15p of each payment they receive and give that instead?

"It's only 15p". Yes, but imagine if every retailer, restaurant and service provider started adding 15p to every bill.
I do eat at Pizza Hut and I do just pay the 15p, but perhaps I should have a moan as I don't like the idea of this becoming commonplace. If they want to give money to charity they should charge 15p extra on the menu price and then they can do what they like with the money, but tacking it on to the end of the bill and making the customer have to ask (awkwardly) for it to be removed, if they even notice at all, isn't really on.

Just ask them to remove it. There's a hotel chain that does (or used to) add £1 on for charity - I just requested it be removed.

    I choose how / when I donate.

There are stand up cards on the tables advising of this & whilst I don't begrudge the worthy charity 15p I do feel it should be choice to add not to have it put on automatically so one has no choice in the matter. Having to ask to have it removed would make me uncomfortable to the point that I wouldn't do so and I assume that's what they count on - not a very nice way to raise money really is it?

Why dont they just give them a fair price for the raw materials they use instead...

This was my first thought when I saw the first post - everytime I've been in (around 3 times in the last 5 months or so) the cards have been prominent. If you feel that strongly about it that you ask to have it removed then that's your choice to do so, perhaps they just assume that people see the cards and agree to pay it.

Hi everyone. I work at a pizza hut and i try to make sure all the tables i serve know what the 15p is for, and i say very nicely if you read through the leaflet and need it taken off for any reason it isn't a problem. It is totally up to the individual and i wouldn't make them feel bad about it and i don't think badly of anyone who wants it taken off. it ends soon though as it is only done for a certain period of time each year ( i think 2 months or so). Pizza hut donate a certain amount to the charity too.
