    Right.....have had a splurge.

It is a year this month since we moved here, and we have done very little to it in terms of decorating and the like. I am a great believer in living in your space to know how you really want it to be, rather than ploughing straight in and making knee-jerk changes that you only want to change again 12 months later.

Because this house was essentially a new build, this hasn't been a problem - magnolia walls and cream carpets are very livable-with, and all the fittings in the bathrooms and kitchen are new so nothing to do there.

The thing that has been most "it'll do", however, is the pictures etc that are on the walls - most of the pictures from my old house/old life, don't work here - either because the style of the house is different, the shapes of the rooms are different, or just that when I got here I really decided that the "old" life was worthy of packing away.

So, today, 12 months on from moving in, I have just spent a third of my Christmas bonus on a number of photographs that I saw at an exhibition in London last month. These will all need to be framed when they arrive, so the end cost will take up a good amount of my bonus, but it is what I want, and it will enhance my new space. They are very different from anything that I have owned before and they are the sort of thing that bonuses *should* be spent on.

I had originally allocated the money to mine and DS's season tickets, but I can do those interest free throughout the season if need be so I will just incorporate it in the budgets instead if I have to.

It is perhaps a bit of an extravagance, but it is actually a good part of living and settling here which I think is worthy of far more than I am actually going to be spending.

    Hiya Hypno
Love the opening post! After years of being the dutiful wife, mother, employee and debt-buster extraordinaire, you certainly deserve to darn well start pleasing yourself.

Your later posts reminded me of something my Mum once said. I must have been about 14 and was watching Grange Hill when she flounced in like Shirley Valentine and said that today she has been hoovering and stopped as she wondered "Who am I?"
"I'm your Mother, your Dad's wife, the cleaner, the cook, ironer, driver, but who am I? Who am I?! WHO AM I????"

I went "Uh?" (wanting to get back to Tucker et al) but I recognise that feeling now. When you are whipped into a tornado of work, family, work family, you barely come up for air and it's easy not to address your own needs. I know that sometimes I feel lost and that I'm not fulfilling my potential (if I have any more in me :o) or at least using my creativity to the full.

I'm sorry i missed the part about losing your best friend, I'm very sorry to hear that.

Despite being debt free, there *are* worrying times ahead for us all. But I think it's not the times, but how you deal with them that defines you (if that makes sense).
I'm sure that you will navigate it all beautifully and with total class, as usual.
Have fun in 2012, as we've said before Fortune favours the brave and you sure as hell are that! xxx

    I found a lovely quote the other day which I've written on the back of a beautiful postcard so I can remind myself of it when I start to worry if I've done or said the right thing;

"Your time is limited so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
    - Steve Jobs -

I like that Ocean, despite him being uber-dogmatic by all accounts.

    I read one recently too:

Stop trying so hard to fit in, when you were born to stand out

Which probably applies to Ms H ;)

As for losing my friend - just so that no one thinks the worst, she hasn't died. She just doesn't like me any more. And I'm not in the place now to be changing myself just for someone else to like me :o

There's absolutly no reason for you to change just so someone else likes you.

I think he's saying live life by your own dogma, not someone elses.

I avoid being dogmatic as I always remember the saying: "Karma will run over your dogma..."

You were doing soooo well until the :o... So I shall repeat: "Friends are people who know everything about you, and they like you anyway."
