Neighbour finds our christmas lights "annoying"...

  • i am surprised by the people saying or implying the OP or anyone else decorating the outside of their house are selfish by not considering the neighbours. IMO i think the neighours are inconsiderate and selfish by not considering other people before they moan and look down their noses at those that do decorate.

i think the majority of people say they like decorating or looking at decorated houses. some people like it some people dont. its not an all year round occurance. as stated before live and let live.

I think the house looks pretty as you've posted it but you've cropped off the garage and that sounds less so but I'm so an@l about decorations looking 'just right' that I won't put lights in an outside tree (even though I love them) because there are weeds in the garden :rotfl: (I'm a bundle of laughs taking photos too, by the time I've checked there's nothing visually offensive in the background the moment has passed :o )

I'd never complain about anybody else's decorations though but you could be stressing over nothing, if she's anything like my mum she might just like a good moan and if it wasn't that she'd find something else to moan about.

Yep the garage is definately brighter,DS was trying to fit the pic on some card he was making hence the crop but will post the full pic once it's dark.Even though it's got the lit up characters on there our car blocks the view of them from the neighbour plus the garage is to the side that isn't opposite her house. And you are so right, she found something else to moan about already. She was out casually mentioning to the neighbour to the side of her that they "alarmed " her by "noisily" putting their wheelie bin out at 9 the other night and could they do it in the morning as she was awake early :rotfl:

  • i live opposite a neighbour with outside house decorations and im dreading him putting them up again as both my front bedroom windows are directly across from his house. this affects my son and daughter who both go to bed about 8 - 9pm and his lights are on until about midnight it was worse when they were younger and went to bed even earlier

we have chocolate brown lined curtains and nets but the light coming into his room are like the blackpool illuminations regardless of whether they flash or not

you have to live across from this to know what a pain in the backside it is and you dont get any choice in the matter

however i have never complained and I told the kids to endure it as my view is whats the point the neighbours dont have to do what i want so its not worth falling out over but god its a pain in the whatsit

I didn't read everything, but if they are 'for the kids' then surely they don't need to be switched on until 10pm every night. Why don't you turn them on when the kids are home form school and turn then off when they go to bed.

I just noticed you said your son wasn't asleep by 10pm because he has a sleep disorder, but nevertheless i'd still be saying at 7pm or 8pm, "The lights are going to bed now and so are you." .

The neighbour complaining is opposite the left side of our house, her next door neighbour is opposite the other half on the right..does that make sense??
Anyway we DO live with the lights that the other neighbour puts up.From our living room after tonight there'll be a snowman globe and a light up merry christmas banner under their second floor windows, plus the lights outlining their house and whatever else they add. It's not like our house is the only one on the road who decorates :)

I already posted ^^^ up there somewhere that my son has a sleep disorder, doesn't sleep and 10pm was a compromise. Not everyone has kids that trot off to bed by 7pm each night :)
I can feel myself getting frustrated now and would maybe be even more "accommodating" and offer to turn them off earlier if she showed an ounce of consideration for us.
We decided we're going to keep the lights on the dimmest settings, stick to the same times we have since we moved in years ago and see what the lights the other neighbours put up tonight are like. x

Offer her a quid pro quo. She's told you she doesn't like a few christmas light, in return, tell her you're not mad keen on opera of yappy dogs or noisy car repairs.

I'd probably make sympathetic noises then do nothing. It's four weeks. She sounds like a right old misery. Who sits looking out of their front room windows anyway?

What has the tree being up, got to do with drawing the curtains? Or is the tree in the garden?

    Showing it off ?

Really I don't get it-You can at best see outside decorations partially from inside the house-and most people decorate the front of their homes not the back so it seems they are meant for other people to see more than for their own enjoyment-The person who asked why the OP's lights are on til 10pm when presumably the kids are asleep long before that has a point.
Quite honestly the "son with Aspergers" bit confused me-Most AS kids find Christmas difficult as it disrupts their precious routines and adds stress (I have a son with AS and have worked with young people with the disorder and know first hand however much they want to enjoy Christmas the expectations of others makes it tougher for them)

I don't have any problem with people decorating their own homes-but be honest about the reasons why you and the Jones both do it:rotfl::rotfl:

    *tentatively raises hand* :o

I do. My couch runs alongside the window and I sit there watching the birds on the bird table and the world pass by.

Until it gets dark mind, then I close my curtains. :D
