  • We put our christmas lights up( as we have for the past seven christmases)yesterday and I have to say the house looks FAB.There is a fine string of lights round the top of the house/bay window,a string of icicles across the middle then 3 characters on the garage.

"Characters"? Do you mean lit-up large things like Father Christmas and reindeer?

Very Christmassy, not overkill at all. I'd not take them down and the neighbour should just shut her curtains for a few weeks.

If you want to see overkill, I live in the US and they really know how to overkill on a grand scale and it starts in November!

yes I remember about 20 years ago there was an American couple who lived near my aunt and uncle. In December theirs was the only house around which was decorated outside - but it was festooned on the roof, in the garden, on the walls, with any outside lights they could find. It was beautiful (actually now it would probably seem very garish) and we'd drive from the next town to see it :D.

I have never had Christmas lights outside personally, but I have no problem with people that do. I certainly don't feel the need to look down upon and sneer at their decision to do so. Snobbery at it's finest!

Absolutely. I tell you what you though, drive down a street with a few tasteful white/blue non-flashing lights in trees and a street that looks like an outreach program for B&Q's christmas lighting department and most people will admit (even grudgingly) that the first one looks better.

One of the many, many problems with society today is that people seem to celebrate quantity over quality. I believe in the adage of 'less is more' and I have nooooo problem being called a snob on the basis that I shun garish tat ;)

there's one house round the corner from us who have blue lights hanging from their tree that are meant to look like icicles but unfortunately look really really like mens' doo-dahs and once you see it you can't unsee it - I'm not sure that having their house mentally dubbed the "widdler tree house" is quite what they intended for the festive season.

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:I'd love to see that!!!

Why not fill your living room up with these lights instead? Then you might see what a nuisance they are!!!!

(Although Bumpmakesfour's lights aren't over the top, they may still be causing a light nuisance.)
We have a 7 foot christmas tree with lights on in the living room, plus a tree in the playroom then after this afternoon the kids will have a tree in each of their rooms also with lights.Hubby also rope lights the banisters so to be honest our house IS full of lights :p

They're not the massive blow up ones, they're about 3 feet high and on our garage doors.Just looked and there's a santa,a stocking and a tree.

That is in YOUR opinion.YOU think it's garish tat WE like it.YOU think it looks better low key WE like it turned up a notch.YOU think less is more (and I've read your other posts that seem to flame pretty much every aspect of christmas) WE love everything about christmas. It's each to their own...personal choice..down to the individual blah blah blah:)
What YOU consider to be a "problem with society" I find a bit of harmless fun,to bring a smile to the faces of those I love.I'm not asking our neighbour to love it I'm asking for a bit of give and take.I'm pretty sure a lot of people would have told her to get lost or ignored her and turned their lights on without giving it a second thought again.

What has the tree being up, got to do with drawing the curtains? Or is the tree in the garden?

Our tree is in the bay window of the living room and pretty much obscures the window so we don't draw the curtains.

The problem is low-key is not offensive to anyone, as people who like garish are certainly not going to be offended by low-key, but garish and over the top does adversely affect people who prefer not to have an assault on their senses as they go about their business.

The fact you find this "problem with society" a bit of fun is just the point - there are people (not saying you are like this), who go about doing as they wish with no consideration for others, because they justify it by saying it's fun, harmless, whatever, but the truth is that this attitude of inconsideration for others is a major problem in some areas. I work in a school and can see children every day who are ingrained with this "do as you please regardless of everyone else" attitude and it is very damaging.

How can you say I do as I please..show no consideration etc?I spoke politely to her, posted on here for advice, discussed it with DH,posted a pic for honest opinions, wrote her a card and intended on going round there with the card and chocs to talk to her today. But I guess you didn't read that part..:rotfl:

ETA not sure if you edited or I didn't see it but just saw you weren't necessarily saying I was like that.Getting frustrated because I honestly do think we're being considerate and would hate people to think otherwise!:o
