Holding back eBay feedback to ransom

yes the buyer pays on time, and has no control of condition of parcel he or she recieves, but they do have control over how they then deal with that situation.

Say you sell something, you give feedback straight away, fast payment, great ebay, hope to deal again. Then the parcel turns up at buyers door all mangled, properly packaged up, and it is royal mail's fault.

So the buyer is rightly upset, so want a replacement or refund, gets in touch with seller who asks him to return the damaged item, but the buyer refuses and want a replacement straight or his money back, but refuses to prove the item was damaged or return it. And starts to get really obnoxiuos about it all, sending abusive emails, threats. Then he negs you and starts procedure to get his money back.

I am pretty sure very few sellers will give a refund for a damages item without first having prove it is damaged.

So at end of the day, why should a bad buyer get a good feedback whilst a good seller gets a neg through no fault of theres.

So you see it does not just end when the buyer pays for there item.

Gerbil - here's the last thread about feedback, it had to be locked yesterday. These arguments have been done to death.

    Flying:

But I never leave feedback about an individual. I leave it about a transaction. So I need to know that the transaction is complete -- easy enough when I'm the buyer, impossible when I'm the seller.

Surely, leaving feedback for a buyer just because he / she paid promptly cannot possibly reflect the totality of any transaction. What happens if the buyer has a complaint? What happens if the complaint is unjustified? What happens if I get hit with an NPS or NAD? Or. . . What happens if the buyer's right and I (even with the best of intentions) am wrong?

When the dust has settled, I'll want my feedback to serve as an accurate transaction record not for my benefit, or the buyer or seller's benefit, but for the benefit of others in the eBay community.

If, when a problem occurred, my buyer was aggressive / hasty / intemperate, then I'll say so in FB: whether they paid with the speed of light is well-nigh irrelevant. But if my buyer was patient / calm / understanding, I'll say that.

And if I've been in the wrong, yes, I'll say that too, because I've found that a seller who admits to occasional fallibility is a seller that -- daft as it may seem -- is a seller people trust. (I'm actually a Fair Trade member, a little unofficial 'club' but notable, or so I've found, for the presence of others who are more than willing to hold up their hands when they're in the wrong -- and none of 'em have suffered for their honesty.)

Rushing in with a feedback that merely parrots (for example) "Good eBayer. Paid promptly. A+++++++" does no-one on eBay any favours, because buyer / seller reputations on eBay are forged from the calibre of a transaction overall. . . not bits of it.

Anyway. That's my sixpennorth. Not going to say anything else about FB -- promise! (So soo & fay can come out now from under the bunker  )

  • Hi Neilwood and codger,

Now you've explained further (for the nth time - sorry!) I do get it now, like I said I wasn't being antagonistic I couldn't get my head around it literally.

It does make sense and I have lost my cynicism (on this topic at least - plenty of other stuff to be cynical about!) which is a good thing as I just bought a £300 item off there so I need to be feeling good about it!

Thanks again and sorry to drag the topic on I know you all must be fed up of it/defending yourself.

This topic of feedback will carry on and on, in fact another thread has popped up on whole subject, so your not the first and certainly wont the be the last to bring this up.

until people can get over there hang ups over feedback score, it will be a never ending circle

  • I think maybe they should have a "feedback escrow" service where it tells the other user if you have left feedback but doesn't show it until the other has submitted theirs and vice versa.

Again, this has been raised before.

So a scammer rips someone off, then gets a message saying he's been left feedback. Is he going to:

    a) leave a nice feedback for the unfortunate buyer, allowing the neg that he has been left to show?

    or

    b) do nothing and allow the negs to pile up invisibly?

…Anyway, I have just received the item and it is not as described (description said it was sealed but the seal is open) this does bother me as due to the type of item it is I wouldn't have bought a second hand one. ..

After a set time (2 weeks?) then the feedback could be make public automatically then the one who didn't leave fedback would lose their chance to post feedback.

2 weeks is a long time for a scammer...

Anyway the fact remains that ebay's feedback system is imperfect. There are changes happening, but they won't please everyone.

The bottom line is that feedback is voluntary, so it's quite surprising that threads like this get so long about a subject that is optional! :D
