That was me. I said it because I regularly won that prize when I worked in the private sector (plus running two businesses). Back in those days though I was working to become financially independant, so it was well worth it. My motives now are totally different.

Bank holidays were generally just as busy as one of my businesses was racecourse bookmaking.

Whay kind of job do you do? I thought there was a minimum entitlement to paid annual leave?

I wondered that but then he said he did get bank holidays off but yet to be paid for them. That didn't sound like self-employed.

I think he meant that if he didn't do any work on a bank holiday then he can't charge for work done on that particular day.

I started working as a university lecturer last year because it was always something that I wanted to do. I couldn't really accept the huge pay cut that it would have involved when I worked in private practice, but after retiring early 11 years ago to run my businesses and after selling one of them 2 years ago, I had both the time and inclination to reconsider it.

Why should I feel sheepish about accepting the salary package on offer at the time, are you saying in my position you would have demanded a pay cut? Anyway as my lecturer's salary is less than 40% of my overall income I am paying for a substantial part (if not all) of my pension myself.

My question in post 34 was to Emy1501, you decided to answer it and as yet Emy has decided not to answer it.You seem to be lecturing part time and have other business interests so your hardly the typical teacher are you......

Where does emy1501 say that teachers are special?

The comment "special" seems to only come from non-teachers.
