For many teachers the key issue is the retirement age change not the increase in contributions. I am a special needs teacher. My job is very physical because of moving and handling issues as well as being emotionally and mentally draining. I love my job, but couldn't do it at 67 without being a risk to the children.
QUOTE]
Why do teachers believe they have an occupation which is more physically and emotionally damaging than many other occupations?.
Try being a self employed builder humping heavy weights all year round come rain or shine and at the end of it not being paid by the client.I know so many tradesmen riddle wih Arthritis barely able to hold a mug of tea after working their nuts off for 50 years who couldn't afford to have a private pension let alone pay towards public sector pensions .
No offence but teachers need to toughen up a bit .. My income hasn't gone up in 5 years but my outgoings have ...
No one is forced into any occupation and we are all free to make a career change at any time.0 -
With building you need a plan B, you need to study/get new skills for a less active career later. I too use to do building and witnessed some horrendous injuries. Most builders have an extremely short lived plan for the future, they also have frequently appalling unhealthy life styles apart from the physical side.
Builders have to plan for the future more so than others and mitigate unforeseen risks.:exclamatiScams - Shared Equity, Shared Ownership, Newbuy, Firstbuy and Help to Buy.

To be honest I can't see to many parents being happy with their kids being taught by someone who is nearly 70. The kids will have field day with the majority of them.
I hope I don't have to work to long past 60 as where I have worked the majority of people working well into their 60's have become a bit joke as they just can't hack it anymore. The pace of change is too much for them and these are in simple jobs.0 -
Errr no! Teachers only get incremental rises for the first six years of their career. Our salaries have been frozen for 2 years, so no annual increase. As for the bike shed claim - haha, I wish! I am not complaining about my job or salary but do get very wreary of the extreme inaccuracy of some statements made about our working conditions and pay.
And I, for one, get fed up with Teachers moaning about their lot AND misleading the public (who pay their wages).
6 payrises up the scale - yes - but how conveniently forgetting the UPS 1-3 !!! That equals TWELVE years of TWO payrises per year!!
Also, forgetting the TLR payments ..... even if you stop what you were paid the TLR payment for, you STILL get that addition for a further THREE YEARS!! All paid for by the struggling taxpayer!!!
So, if you want to get real - let's get real ...... what about the 26 hour week? That is the time the Head and Governors can direct you to work.
And the 13 weeks holiday - the 5 day INSET days - the gold Pensions - the high pay - the pastoral type of work ....... hmmmmmmm, yes, I can see how hard it is ....Bringing Happiness where there is Gloom!0 -

I'm sick of buy to let landlords who pay the minimum of tax, steal first time buyer homes, get bailed out with extra low interest rates and the expense of prudent savers and charge record rents despite their low interest rate bailout..
Teachers have a use, educate our young which in turn provides increased GDP for our country. Buy to let landlords are just a parasite.:exclamatiScams - Shared Equity, Shared Ownership, Newbuy, Firstbuy and Help to Buy.

My wife gets to work about 8 each morning and does not leave till 5 most evenings. She also has to do between 1-2 hours a night at home. On the other hand I and most people I know can turn up to work just before 9 and leave dead on 5pm can spend a fair amount of the day chatting, surfing and taking fag breaks. Can always take a lunch break etc. No degree needed in my job all for about 3-4k less than the max a teacher can earn. I know which job I would rather do.
There are more demanding jobs than teaching but it's pretty demanding especially compared to an office job.0 -
I am a teacher. I am aware, very aware,of the value of my pension. It is something that I see as part of my salary package. Teacher's salaries and conditions have just had a major independent review in Scotland. In the review it was noted that our salaries only represent a fair wage for the actual contracted hours ( not all the unpaid overime we do) and if our pension provision remains as it is now. It was recommended that our salaries would need to be increased if the proposed pension changes go through.

Is it any surprise that children today have such an enormous sense of entitlement when the people they spend most of their time with have such an exaggerated and misguided sense of their worth?0 -

Prudent is a teacher in Scotland as am I. We don't have an Upper Pay Scale. What we did have was a Chartered Teacher scale which has now been frozen and is looking to be removed altogether as they want to save money. Most teachers will not go onto this scale as it requires further years of study to take modules. We have only one teacher in our school who is a Chartered teacher. So for the majority of Scottish teachers the main scale is it and once you reach the top there are no further increments.
Googling UPS reveals that there are 3 Parts. So the main scale of 6 points plus the UPS of 3 points would give 9 possible increments and not 12 as you said. It also reveals that the UPS is similar to the Chartered teacher scale and is subject to reaching a required standard although doesn't seem to need the extra study with cost associated modules.
As to yearly pay rises again this is not automatic. Currently there is a 2 year wage freeze folllowed by a 2 year wage cap of 1%.Also, forgetting the TLR payments ..... even if you stop what you were paid the TLR payment for, you STILL get that addition for a further THREE YEARS!! All paid for by the struggling taxpayer!!!
Again Prudent was right in what she is saying as a Sottish teacher. We don't have TLR payments and never have had. Wish we did as I have full responsibility for ICT in my school but am paid no extra. So, if you want to get real - let's get real ...... what about the 26 hour week? That is the time the Head and Governors can direct you to work.
No idea what the 26 hour week is. In Scotland we have a 35 hour working week. We also have another 35 hours to be done over the course of the year as CPD. Of course most of us do way over these hours in the normal course of our jobs. And the 13 weeks holiday - the 5 day INSET days - the gold Pensions - the high pay - the pastoral type of work ....... hmmmmmmm, yes, I can see how hard it is ....
Why aren't you a teacher if it's such a cushy job then?
Yes it would be good to get real.0 -

Yes today's parents do have a lot to answer for don't they?0 -

I'm a lecturer by day but due to a radiation accident in our university labs, when I get angry at night I am compelled go out and steal homes from hard working families and then rent them back to them at extortionate rents.
Or it could just be that I thought it was a reasonably good investment of course.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0
