  • Hi :) I'm Eloise and I'm new to MSE Forums. I'm trying to make 2012 the year that I learn how to look after my money and stop spending when I don't need to! I'm 21 and feel like I need to be a bit more grown up about my money - so here goes :)

My ultimate goal this year is to save my money to go towards rent and house related things, as I'm planning to move out in September/October.

I've just sealed my tin (a nice big Soap and Glory gift set one) and I am starting it off with the 1p's, 2p's, 5p's and 10p's that have accumulated in my purse - a whopping £2.15!

Taking a lot of steps this year to combat my spending, excited to be starting it with this one!

Managed to take a load of bagged small change to the bank yesterday and get it sorted into two £5 notes and a single £1. So £11 into the pot for me yesterday!

Found 5p on the way to work so that will go in when I get home!

    It all counts!!

Stick with the green tea, samtoby, I'm sure you'll grow to love it, my DH does and he hated it at first!

Well done, Sessie, you're saving well.

Quiet on here so far today, look out in a while for the pre teatime rush. See you later folks.

little_sweetie, I paid for my supermarket shop with cash last night- following your suggestion, I thought I’d try it out. It did make me more aware of the amount I was spending.

I can also report a minor success (of the “engage brain and don’t buy stuff” variety): I’d got a pack of tortilla wraps in my trolley but realised when I got to the till that I was already sorted for lunch that week so didn’t buy them- pat on the head (and 70p saved going in the pot)!

Following AlternateMe’s suggestion, I have a big box of Clipper green tea bags on my desk (£1 for 60 (50 plus 20% extra free) in Morrisons- bargain!) to act as an alternative to the coffee filters (with health benefits as well- get in!).

It seems to work for me, RedGoose, I always try to do a quick addition in my head as I load the conveyor belt too by rounding prices up to the nearest 50p. That way I'm pleasantly surprised when the bill comes to slightly less than my imagined total :j I can, however, come a bit unstuck if I start a conversation in the queue 'cos I can't add up as well as talk! :rotfl:My OH knows not to talk to me! Well done you for putting the tortillas back too! Planning meals is definitely the key to saving money and not wasting food :T

Have a lovely evening all x
