Miles off we have a Poundland & the staff - the woman is really pleasant & very helpful - same in another Poundland - couldn't be nicer. If you get rude, unhelpful staff I always believe it is a management problem - not proper training of staff. But people can have off days & I wouldn't hold it against them forever & ever...I thought they just sold stuff for £1 as well.
  • I work for Poundland so I can answer a few Q's.
Any multibuy offers ( 3 for £1 etc) may not be sold singly for less than £1. This is a ruling from Trading Standards - if you choose to buy one item it will cost you £1 - sorry.
Are we dense? No, just overworked, abused and underpaid. The offers usually change on a Wednesday; what was 3 for £1 on Tuesday may well become 3 for £2 on Wednesday - the floor staff have no control over this and struggle to keep up with up to 50 weekly price changes.
The person you see filling the shelves probably isn't responsible for that department, we get moved around as needed :-(
Floor staff are not in a position to check prices on tills - we don't have a button for it!
Finally, many staff are on 12 hour contracts and so by the time they've learnt all the changes - they've finished for the week.
The retail trade is highly competitive and if they can run a shop on minimum staffing levels - they will.
I'm sorry you've had bad experiences but we, at customer-facing level, really do work hard to get it right for you.
  • Sorry forgot the 'Age-checks' Q, the till is programmed at Head Office and certain items such as: glues, aerosols, smoking paraphanalia and even garden tools are flagged up on the screen when the barcode is scanned. The cashier has no control over this. "Is the customer over 16,18,21 etc?" is the message that flashes up onto the screen, we answer yes or no and then we are able to carry on with the transaction.
Still think we're a bit dense?

This is not a ruling from Trading Standards, it's a rule that the chain has implemented.
  • We have Poundland and 99p stores locally. Do you think there would be a business opportunity for a 98p store? Perhaps somebody would then open a 97p store and undercut me....

Dense enough to drag up a thread that's almost 2 years old......

I do get your explanations though - but I'm sure the OP has forgotten all about her baked bean trauma in Poundland.

Where I live, there's a large Poundland next to a 99p store. When the 99p store first opened, PL dropped it's prices to 95p for 6 months, then upped them to 97p to continue to undercut the 99p Store. Now, the 99p store has lowered it's prices to 97p too, to be competitive.
Definitely keeps me amused watching the two of them battle it out over a couple of pennies

as has been said, this is nothing to do with trading standards, and will be a company policy.

lots of places have lots of price changes. Either keep up, or don't be afraid to ask a colleague/cashier rather than fob a customer off
The person you see filling the shelves probably isn't responsible for that department, we get moved around as needed :-(

simply walking to the rolls and asking a colleague to check, however, would be helpful to the customer and demonstrate a basic level of CS

This thread is years old and you've dug it up to essentially say "sorry we can't provide basic customer service, but we don't remember things that well..."

    So, y'know...

Went into poundland today where they were selling 3 x 450g HP beans for £1 but they had smaller 150g Heinz beans which suit me better as there is no waste

Why use a third - a half tin of 450g beans and store the rest in a food storage pot in the fridge? Can keep up til 5 days. I live alone and NEVER buy any small tins of any food product as the price per g is generally more expensive and always get offers on the large tins.
