    it says there

'Jobcentre Plus adviser could decide to force him to undertake what he sees as a pointless and demeaning process, during which he will have no time to actively seek employment. “Actively seeking employment” is one of the conditions on which Jobseeker’s Allowance is paid.'

This is NOT the work programme but the job centre. When on the WP you no longer answer to the job centre

The biggest barrier to finding a job is the lack of jobs!.I know about 20 people who've got degrees and experience, who have been laid off etc and cant get anything.
Theres very little about and the jobcentre know this, its an absolute farce. The majority of people will do most jobs as its better than jobseekers. Its too easy to blame the individuals and their problems. This is overly simplistic and propoganda-pure and simple. Its around 100 plus going for each job. While I appreciate that some people do have more barriers than others, thats not the main problem. My friend looked in the Guardian the other day and for our region, the were 4 jobs(paid) all the rest were unpaid voluntary work.

I hope that they win the case and this scheme is found to be unlawful. However with this government and its determination to victimise the poorest in society I wouldn't put it past them to make a change in the law so that this kind of thing is made legal.

How anyone can argue that working for below minimum wage or for benefits isn't anything other than slavery or illegal is beyond me, yet many seem to think there is nothing wrong with it. I mentioned a few months ago that someone would challenge the legallity of this at some point and then and only then will we see just how the courts rule as to whether this whole things goes down the drain.

In some ways it might be a good thing as I'm sure the government could actually do with stimulating the economy first and seeing some form of recovery as this whole scheme under present conditions is unfit for purpose.

do they really help anyone or are they just set up to massage the unemployment figures?

How does having loads of people in a room doing crosswords, wordsearches and looking at optical illusion pictures get them a job.

  • Work programme ,new deal part III they are having a laugh at us, goverment needs tobe seen doing something and this is it,we have too many people and not enough jobs etc.Manufacturing has been destroyed over the last 15 years and dosent look like returning anytime soon.We are becomin or are the warehouse packers of europe.

I was offered a semi skilled type job yesterday at £6.35P/hr shifts 6-2 was earning that in 1983,before anyone says its a job and all that crap, try telling that to eom or my now , lanlord.Workprogramme is good compared to this as long as you work in whatever position they may find you at least you can keep a roof over your head.

Also a useful site about MWA and the Work Programme where they talk about this move by public interest lawyers:

I presume that you meant, "This is not the Jobcentre, but the Work Programme", but this is incorrect. The WP and Mandatory Work Activity are unrelated schemes.

The MWA is a placement enforced, on a discretionary basis, by Jobcentre advisers, not WP providers.
