Now, if someone had remarked that large picture files of say 250k are a bit unfair on dial-up users, as they take about a minute to download, I could understand the point

And that's what I expected this would actually be about, before I read a trivial complaint about something that usually helps people read a tone of voice .

funny how the most of the people defending these ridiculous methods of communication are those who seem to be locked to their computer with posts either nearing or in the tens of thousands.

Sometimes using smilies can be very helpful - particularly when you're making posts criticising some of this site's most prolific posters!

It can make the difference between coming across as a bit of a joker or a pompous miserable bloke. :rolleyes:
