    Actually they are.
Having owned both in recent years.

Old Mazda-based Kia or newer Hyundai-based Kia?

The newer cars are light-years ahead of ropey old French rubbish like the Renault.

Lets just put the warranty thing to bed shall we?

Most parts will have been supplied with a minimum 5 year supplier warranty, this goes for most manufacturers. Offering a 7 year warranty isn't KIA saying "our cars are great, and here's the proof", it's actually more of a gamble, they're gambling that the extra trade will outstrip the cost of replacing parts during the final 2 years of the warranty.

Other manufacturers make profit from failures by charging the customer for the parts and THEN charging the supplier for the same under the suppliers warranty.... The automotive industry has been screwing it's suppliers like this for decades.

Is this 7 year warranty a good thing? Yes
Does it mean what you think it means? No

Ther fact remains the buyer still has a seven year warranty. How the manufacturers and their suppliers do business is of little relevance to the consumer.

If the manufacturers are getting a five year warranty from their suppliers then why is it we still see most manufacturers giving a three year warranty on the vehicle?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the newer generation Clios, they're far from "ropey old french rubbish" - though I would have the Kia too, considering the models you're looking at the Kia will be a nicer car to drive.

Kia Cee'd is generally a good, reliable car. Nothing like the Kias of 5 years ago.

    I just explained that.....

It gives the manufacturer (actually the dealer) a nice window in which to make double (ish) profit.
I know this to be true, I worked for a tier 1 supplier and one of our quality engineers had it out with a dealership (of a particular car made somewhere south east of Gloucester) when he challenged that the part he was having to pay for was still under supplier warranty ;)

Given that the OP is going to be buying secondhand, is the warranty going to be transferable to them?

The warranty also includes the labour to fit said part.

So you are saying that all components supplied to manufacturers are given a five year warranty? Do you have any evidence of that, any links?

That's more or less what I've always thought it meant.
