Just spent £500 for MOT - now oil leak

Just because a car is old doesn't make it a classic. You would need to have one in showroom condition to consider it some sort of classic or to have a collectors value, if there is a market for them yet.

The main reason there aren't too many around these days, is because most of them have died and gone to that great big scrapyard in the sky. :A

Just because it is old, does not make it a classic and it is certainly no reason to throw money at it to keep it on the road in the hope that one day it will suddenly become a classic.

If car has only just had service then go right back to the garage and 'enquire' nicely why it's sprung a leak in their hands.. But don't give them the chance to charge you for another repair!
As for replacement, I'm with the OP on this.. If you don't understand what's going on under a car bonnet it's better to stick with the reliable old banger you know that risk buying an unreliable old heap. Stuff all available cash in to your piggy bank, do homework and get reliable advice (AA/RAC inspection) unless you can to buy new or new enough to have proper guarantee.

If it appears to have stopped could just be "waste" oil from the change that has now dripped off. Careless top ups can also lead to beads of oil dripping down the engine for longer than you think.

If you have had it for that long and don't know much about cars then 300/400 pound a year for something you do know seems perfectly acceptable.

You would loose much more than that getting something just a few years younger, and more, if it had been "mechanically" neglected.

By all means save up but try to get a decent leg up.

Thanks, just phoned them. It is still leaking but appears to be smaller patches on the road. They've asked me to take it in tomorrow and they'll have a look while I wait. Suggested it might just be from the oil change - the overspill sensor. Fingers crossed! I think they are ok, sounded helpful on the phone and willing to take a look to make sure nothing serious while I'm there.

Thanks, exactly my reason for keeping it. It doesn't look great but it's never let me down so far. I am getting concerned as it's getting so old though, just to be sure it's safe but then again newer cars can also go horribly wrong! It was also for the convenience of not having to shop around, deal with salesmen and sellers etc as mentioned earlier..

I'm on Debt Free Wannabe thread trying to deal with saving up for this and other things. Very helpful but going to take me some time to sort out.:)

Thanks, this is what the garage thinks it could be. I am taking it in tomorrow. There is a patch of oil again today but it seems less than before. It isn't a huge amount and I did refill it myself when I thought oil was leaking so I may have made the problem worse if it is overspill. Hopefully it's only that!
