    Identity Protection
Thought I'd post this and get ANY reaction. My wife filled in a form from MBNA regarding Identity Theft. She sent the form away to get info. Included was a 30 day FREE trial. The cost would be £59.99 if she took out the sub. However, within a few weeks, she got a bill on her MBNA account slip for £59.99. She phoned them to ask about this. It's for the Identity Protection she took out. No she didn't... oh yes she did. She claimed she only sent for the information, when it arrived she decided it wasn't for her and din nothing about it. HENCE it would seem that beause she did NOTHING, she gets hit with a bill for £59.99. She again contacted them and asked for proof that she had signed for this... answer.. 'we don't need your signature'... and you DON'T get a refund and CAN'T cancel. And if you don't pay you will be billed for late payments of £12 a time. We contacted Witch lawyers who dictated a letter to send to MBNA and give them 14 days to reply. The 14 days passed without result. She contacted them again to find out what was happening... only to be told that as she didn't make a minimum payment £12 is now added to her bill. Se explained that she was waiting to hear from MBNA regarding her letter posted on the 7th March. ' We answer letters after 28 days' Is this their own rules?? She has now contacted the Banking Ombudsman.. who says they 'WILL TRY and get her money back and this thing closed...' but they can't be sure if they can.
Anyone else had problems like this from the SHAMEFUL EM BE EN AE.
Both my wife and I are pensioners, and have chronic heart problems.. this is doing us no good.

beware: have recently viewed my credit report on experian and then cancelled the free membership but was told would still be valid for the rest of the 30 days. 3 days before my time was up decided to get the dreaded credit score. this is a paid for service-£5.95. HOWEVER was unable to access the site all through the w/end and evening and early hours. had no option other than to rejoin. have asked for the monthly membership fee which they have charged me to be refunded as could not access site and all they say is t&c's state that they update at night. pointed out tried to access all w/end but they still refuse to refund.

why does moving house / not being at an address for long affect your credit rating badly?

It's a sign of instability and/or regularly changing circumstances. Lenders like customers to be stable; they want to know you'll be able to pay off debts and be easy to get hold of for as long as you're with them.

If you have an experien credit score and the scores are 0 against monthly payments, is this good , how do you find out the score , ive seen that some people write their score is 375/1000 for example.
Also i got married a year ago and changed my name on several things (credit/ store cards), a friend said this also can mess your credit rating, pleas ecan anyone advise me:confused:

The score you refer to means absolutely nothing. It is just a conniving marketing tool dreamt up by Experian to part you from your money to see something that is useless.

No lenders use any other information from Experian, Equifax or Call Credit other than your payment history and credit history and electoral roll history.

Changing your name does not affect your credit rating as long as you have changed your name on all your banking and credit facilities and on the electoral roll. Thus as long as everything all ties in you should not have a problem.

The only time any one has any difficulty is obtaining credit is when there is adverse information, i.e. judgements, default notices etc, are not on the electoral roll or when adverse information is incorrectly recorded. The latter is exactly why everyone should check their file on a regular basis to see if there is anything there that should not be.

  • Hi, can anyone shed some light on this for me please...

I've recently had a problem with my phone company who said I had a bad credit score. I've never missed a payment on anything in my life. I've only moved house once in the last 4 years and i've been in the same job for over 4 years so stability shouldn't be an issue either.
My bank also recently refused me an overdraft but the system wasn't giving them a specific reason as to why it was being denied.

The only thing I can think of is one of my parents was recently declared bankrupt. Could it be that because we're at the same address their bad credit history is showing up for me? And if so how do I get around this? Any advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated, i'm completely lost at the moment.
  • Hi,

I have an unused, no overdraft current account from halifax with a perfect record. I also have two other current accounts from different banks. Any opinions on whether closing the Halifax account would improve or hurt my rating??

    Thanks for your help!!

Credit ratings assess people, not dwellings. If you share a financial product with someone else then you are financially linked to them and so their poor management of their own affairs could have a knock-on effect on your own finances and your credit rating, but simply occupying the same house as someone with a poor credit history, past or present, has no effect whatsoever.

Have you checked your credit reports lately? This is the info' lenders see when you apply for credit. (For help, see the *How to obtain credit reports* sticky above.)
