Hi
With the teacher strike on Wednesday i need to take the day off work to watch them. i have 1 day annual leave left that i was saving for the Friday before Xmas. My employer has said i have to use this day off for the strike on Wednesday.
Is this correct ? i wouldnt have thought i would have to use up my annual leave for this type of reason.

why do you think your employer should be inconvenienced because of this?
your children are your responsibility. you need to provide childcare.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
do you have any friends whose kids go to the same school as yours that could look after them if you perhaps returned the favour another time?0

I can not get any child care for various reasons, Why should i have to use up my annual leave for them striking ?0

Because they are your children, your responsibility. Not your employers.0 -
I would have thought that it is one of those things that may be specific to each employer and their HR policies. I've just had a look at the policy at my work and I think if I did not want to use my annual leave then I would have to take the day off as unpaid.
Not fair but thems the rules I guess.:j Debt Free 27.07.2011!! :j0 -

Apparently David Cameron said to bring them to work with you. Not sure how well that would go down with some employers lol
Could you ask to take the day off but make up the hours elsewhere? Or work from home?0 -
When they are sick i take time off and goes down as compasion leave. I have 2 kid ages 5 & 7.
I just thought work were trying to make me use up my annual leave when i didnt have to, i wasnt asking to be judged :silenced: !0 -
My work said if you're striking it counts as unauthorized leave, if you can't come into work because of childcare etc then you have to use up annual leave too. Seems to be fairly standard.0
