I told him that's fine, I'll leave my 6 yr old DD alone in the van while I finish off his job.
Either that or I'll come back in 2 weeks time, when I next have a slot.

I always allocate a week's annual leave to cover any sickness etc that my child might have during the year; my employer does not give compassionate leave for family sickness; I am on strike that day myself (even tho I voted against it) and will be looking after other people's children as well! If I were not in the union and on strike I would have had to take unpaid leave anyway as we are not allowed flexi, annual or working from home on a strike day (not sure how they can enforce this with the schools closed though).Jan 2012: CC £2,340.30, 2nd mortgage £22,932, Mortgage £57,5380

....although, ironically ,at the same time annoying the public and losing any sympathy at the same time
If the public show sympathy though it has less impact surely ?
The only way to bully someone into submission is to get them surrounded, if the government feel pressure from all sides its much more likely to cave :cool:Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais0 -
Oh, great!
Just heard back from my DD's school, they said before that they were sure it would stay open, now they are saying that no notice has to be given whether the teachers go on strike or not, so they don't know!
Seems crazy to me.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

DH's firm is expecting several children to come in this week and dh is plnning to make another attempt to get ''take your dog to work day'' on the table on Wednesday. He's desperte to take one of these blighters to work for a day.:o In all seriousness, he asked me if he should ''buy some candy or something'' for collegues'children on Wednesday (we have no kids and he doesn't know that many) and I suggested that was a really bad idea because high sugar kids are going to find the office more boring than they would without sugar. Plus parents' might not be thrilled.
Also worth saying, I have really terribly fon memories of the rare occasions I went to work with my dad and I was exceptionally fond of one of his secretaries because she had crackers in the shape of fish and yummy chocolate milk. I spent days reading books till they were finished then playing with tresury tags which I pretended were caterpillars and I still think of them as caterpillars:o0 -

Yeah, selfish beggars.
It's funny really all these parents getting on their high horse, where I work people seem only too happy to stay at home if little Johnny has so much as a sneeze, ironically leaving others inconvenienced and having to cover for them. given there has been over a week's notice of the strike there is no way it can be considered "emergency" care of dependents so time off for under 5s etc does not apply.
Annual leave is the best way of dealing with this, bearing in mind the employer is under no obligation to let you take leave at short notice if they are prepared to do this it seems fair.
The strike has actually been talked about for months, although your right only officially confirmed last Wednesday. Many parents at our school sorted out childcare weeks ago on the assumption that the strike would go ahead.
For the person who said the school wouldn't tell them if they were open or not: Unions give 7 days notice of a strike. Most union reps will give heads numbers of strikers and most teachers themselves will let the school know if they are striking to make decision making easier. The school should have decided if to open or not by now.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0 -
