Can I just point out that teachers are only part of the strike action and hundreds and thousands of others are striking too, in defence of something they believe strongly in and are determined to stand up against. The fact is that teachers strike action affects parents who don't want to be put out of their normal routine.
Have you considered what will happen to your children's/grandchildren's education if teachers along with many others are not treated fairly? You will find that fewer and fewer people want to enter the profession. This in turn leads to a lower standard of entry into the job and ultimately reflects on the education children will recieve.
You are happy to allow your most precious commodity, your children, to spend at least as much time in our care as you are your own, be educated by us in academic subjects, moral issues and we help to shape your children for their future. However, you don't seem to want to give us respect, a fair salary and pension and bemoan us when we stand up for our rights.
If you think we are so irresponsble and unworthy why are you letting us shape your child instead of doing it for yourself?
From an overworked, highly educated professional with many, many years experience.
I think I actually love you. This is exactly how I feel. If teachers really are so crap at their jobs then why oh why oh why do people not keep their kids at home and teach them themselves?Updating soon...0 -

I just thought work were trying to make me use up my annual leave when i didnt have to, i wasnt asking to be judged :silenced: !
Obviously not a public sector employee then!!! In public sector you don't get compassionate leave for a minor illness of a child and public sector employees are supposed to have good conditions of service, yeah right!
Who were you planning on 'watching' your children during the christmas holidays if you only have 1 day leave left?0 -
One union (don't know which) sent out an email to their members telling them that they did not have to let the headteacher know if they were striking until 24 hours before the planned strike.
So there are still 2 TAs at our school which have not yet let the head know they will be off - she decided to close the school last wednesday as 95% teachers were, in order to give parents as much notice as possible - so their delayed decision is now a moot point.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

I think you'll find there are thousands of parents that do - me included. Many parents I have spoken to would like to home educate but need the free childcare.0 -
If you think all my job consists of is standing in front of a class of kids you must live in a bubble.
There is absolutely no point in discussing an issue such as this when people have such a narrow minded, skewed view of what really goes on in a school/ classroom.
Your idea that all I do is stand in front of a class of kids is nothing short of insulting.
Perhaps if you to spend some time in a classroom you may understand that we are dedicated professionals devoting our lives and many hours of our own time to educating YOUR children.
And you choose to educate my children, no one forces you. And you're being paid for it.
AND as I said before, I've known good and bad teachers, you're not all saints who are perfectly devoting their life. So stop pretending you all are, it's pathetic.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Thankfully her school and majority of her teachers are brilliant.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Lotus, I do not believe any teacher has ever said they are a saint. However, the point of the strike is that the Government want to take away one of the benefits of being a teacher which makes up for the very mediocre pay. The fact is teachers are chronically underpaid for the work they do.
A friend of mine who has one year less education than I (and hence a years less of student loan debt) and who works no harder than I do, has more disposable income per month than I earn!
Before I became a teacher I worked in the private sector. I earned a very small amount less than I do now but did about half the hours.
I accept the Government proposal of a pension in line with that of the private sector so long as they are prepared to pay me like a private sector worker as well. Became Mrs W in 2011:smileyhea Blessed with Baby boy 1 in 2013, Baby boy 2 in 2016 and Baby boy 3 in 2018 :smileyheaDebt @ 19/8/11 [STRIKE]£20,060 [/STRIKE] current £0Paid off 100% :dance:0 -
I must say (former teacher now SAHM) that as a breed teachers do seem to spend a fair bit of time moaning. It's also true though that they come in for a lot of stick. No other threads on here about the inconvenience that will be caused on Wednesday by other professionals striking for example.
And it's true as you point out Lotus-Eater, that no one forces anyone to go into teaching but as a society we really need good teachers and surely for that reason they should be properly rewarded. And yes, I am aware that not all teachers are brilliant but there are bad apples everywhere in life.
I don't know why the private sector doesn't have unions and don't strike when they're treated badly by employers too but the main argument it seems to me that's made by private sector workers is 'we're treated like carp, so you should be too'Updating soon...0
