  • Hi everyone

Wrote to Egg two weeks ago asking for £65 to be refunded to me (difference between admin fee in 2002 and current one of £150) after remortgaging recently. They sent a grovelling apology letter and credited my account today!:j
  • Another success story.

Sent the template letter to the Coventry Building Society asking for the difference between the original deed release and sealing fee (£95) and the redemption fee I actually paid last year (£195).

Got a cheque for £100 through the post after approx 1 week

Not bad for 30mins work - thanks to all of MSE for this - what a great consumer site!

    Hi,
We took out our first mortgage in 1999 with Halifax. As we moved in 2002, we increased our mortgage with them. I no longer have the details of any fees- Can anyone tell me if there would have been an incorrect charge on increasing the amount?
We switched to IF in 2005 and undoubtedly incurred an incorrect fee then. Before I call them in the morning, I was just wondering if I should be asking for 2 lots of fees?
    Thank you everyone- much appreciated.

    Success!!
Cant believe how easy that was! Rang, gave the two roll numbers and have been told that two cheques- one for £25 and one for £75 will be in the post in the next few days. Was told "I'm not sure why, but in the last week this has become a really popular query so it may take up to 28 days". We all know why! ;)
2 minutes to read about MEAF, 2 minutes to find the roll numbers and 2 minutes to make the call. Hey, I'm on £1000 per hour!
    Thanks MSE:T :A
  • I've just banked a cheque from the Halifax, they paid up within a week of my one and only letter. Best 32 pence (stamp) I've spent in ages.
  • Took a Halifax mortgage out in 2003 and the MEAF had gone up £100 by the time I paid it in 2006.
I wrote in with my claim and they agreed to refund the £100 but sent me a "claim form" to accept the refund in full and final settlement. Obviously don't want any further claims for loss of interest!
The Halifax letter says the refund is as a "gesture of goodwill". And we all thought it was as a result of the FSA ruling!
  • hi there,
I have just called the halifax to see if I paid an exit fee when i switched my mortgage as I do not have any paperwork from when I had my mortgage with them, the nice chap took my name and address and told me that from the dates I had the mortgage I should of paid £100 but was charged £150 so £50 chq would be put in the post to me. I cant beleive how easy it was!!!
Thanks to Martin what a fantastic site keep up the good work

I remortgaged from the Abbey last year. They charged me £225 for the privilege. I was not happy because the first I knew of any redemption fee was when they sent the first annual statement. I used a letter template posted by another user (I think in the A&L thread) and amended it as appropriate.

I got back a letter from them basically not agreeing to this and explainig that the fee was fair. The thing that really irritated me about abbey is that they admited their mortgage discharge fee is a combination of two fees (the original discharge fee and a fee for using their legal services).

    This was my reply.

I then got a letter informing me this was a stalemate and they were passing my complaint on to the relevant department. I then got a letter from the relevant department informing me they were looking into it. About a month went by and I was just wondering what on earth was going on when I got a letter telling me they were still looking into it. Then a few days later I got a letter saying that because I had been a long standing customer (Hah! I was only there 2 years) they were going to refund the £225 as a gesture of goodwill. I got the cheque the next day.

Wow, aweseome. I was in a similiar situation as you before.. Unfortunately thigns didn't work out. Only if I had written a letter like the one you posted.

Further update on the Woolwich. I called their dedicated helpline on 08000 234180. Spoke to very nice lady who asked me some details of the mortgage account, address etc...

She asked the reason for my call and i confirmed i wanted to question the Mortgage Exit Fee of £275 last year.

Within seconds she advised that i should have paid only £95 and that she was going to refund me £275 - £95 = £180 plus 4% intewrest on the money which came to £8.14.

I am advised that I shall receive a payment into my bank account of £188.14 within 5 working days......It's Miller Time  :D

Martin and the Team and everyone who have posted their successes here deserve great credit :T

Without the MSE Site and the posts of successes here I might never have got a refund of my money.:T

Can't wait to tell others as this seems to be the right and proper way for the banks to act against the background of excessive fees, instant interest hikes, but dragging of their heels when it comes to interest rate reductions and bigger banks making wads of dosh into Billions of ££'s profit from our pockets.

MARTIN - Keep up the great work on this site and thanks for being the catalyst for the easiest and quickest ( 5 Mins) refund I have ever received. :money:

    Now I'm off to tackle the A&L !!! :D

I thought I would give you some news.

Woolwich were true to their work and £188 squids were deposited in my account today:beer: :T :j

    :T RESULT !!!

If anyone is reading this thread and doubts are creeping in regards reclaiming....just go for it..what can you lose only a few stamps and a bit of time. I hope alll of these posts and successes inspire you..good hunting
  • Refund in full of £250 from Northern Rock.

I pressed them on the basis that their contract terms state they will charge a reasonable amount in respect of costs incurred by themselves for administration. I reasoned that since there must have been others that took out mortages before and after I did and redemmed them at the same time, that there must have been several different amountscharged for the same admin.

The advised that they charged according to the FSA ruling. I pointed out that they have to charge the true cost, and asked them itemise the true cost.

They dodn't bother; they just coughed up.

I would think that their costs are quite a bit cheaper than the cheapest price they've charged. It took three letters, I was offered £90, then refused anything further, then an offer in full was received.
