Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

Just 2 weeks after downloading the initial template for the letter to reclaim my mortgage repayment fees from Abbey, I have just had reciept of a big fat jucy cheque for £126.00!!
Whats more I had destroyed the original mortgage contract, I wasnt even sure what the original mortgage fee was and was only able to supply a mortgage reference number for their investigations.
So, even if you are not sure if you are entitled to a refund, its still worth a try!!
Martin, you are my hero!!

About 4 days after phoning the Halifax with no info except an old mortgage roll number, I received a cheque for £25 in the post this morning. OK, not a huge sum - but I am dead chuffed - money for a few minutes phone call!0

£150 has just dropped into my bank account from Standard Life Bank who returned the mortgage exit fee charged four years ago. Just one phone call did it, quoting the details on the MSE template letter. Gotta thank you!0

Just to report that Abbey have paid up £126 (see earlier in the thread for their time-wasting saga). But no reference to my letter, and no interest - they have paid other people the interest as well, or a full refund of the £225.0

Hi
I was charged £225 exit fee in October 2006 by LloydsTSB.
I didn't have a copy of the original mortgage agreement, but a redemption statement from the previous year stated just £100 'closing admin charge'. So I wrote claiming the difference, using the template provided on this site.
With two weeks I had a cheque in my hands for the full £225 plus £4.72 interest.
Thank you Martin!0 -
WOW! Thanks Martin! We got our money back yesterday!!!
We paid up our mortgage last March and paid £225 in repayment fees to Abbey. I copied your template, requesting that they check the fees stated on our contract. We received a letter back within a few days in acknowledgement my letter, and then hey presto, yesterday, a cheque arrived for £126. We should have paid just £99!!!!
Shall I ask for the interest back now?????
Keep up the good work MArtin - we listen to all your advice -wherever it is - radio, TV, newspapers, emails - the lot!!!!0 -
Hi,
We took out our first mortgage in 1999 with Halifax. As we moved in 2002, we increased our mortgage with them. I no longer have the details of any fees- Can anyone tell me if there would have been an incorrect charge on increasing the amount?
We switched to IF in 2005 and undoubtedly incurred an incorrect fee then. Before I call them in the morning, I was just wondering if I should be asking for 2 lots of fees?
Thank you everyone- much appreciated.0 -
Just got a refund of £185.00 from Bradford and Bingley after redeeming my mortgage in June 2006. Used template and posted last Weds - less than one week later I have the cheque in my hands! THANK YOU :j0

Hi Martin,
We had paid our Woolwich mortgage off in January 2007 and had blanched at the £275 fee they charged for this auspicious privilege, but bit the bullet and paid it just to enable to get out of their clutches! Then we started hearing about the fact that these fees may be illegal and wrote to them asking them to justify the fee. Nothing happened for three weeks, no acknowledgment, nothing. So my wife rang them and was put through to the Woolwich's Mortgate Exit Fee Department! They were very vague about where the letter had gone, but confirmed they had received it! In the next breath she asked if we would like part refund over the phone! Twenty minutes later a refund of £180.77 was made and appeared in our account two hours later! A letter has been promised, but nothing yet a week after the event! If the letter arrives and contains anything juicy I will pass it on. Very grateful to this site and Martin in particular for his dedication to saving us from these money grabbing institutions.

Following my letter to Birmingham Midshires, they sent me a vacating fee enquiry form to complete. Within 10 days of completing this, they've written to offer £50 as a "gesture of goodwill" as long as I sign a form within 28 days agreeing that this is in full and final settlement.
I've still to pursue another mortgage redemption fee with B Midshires as well as Nationwide, Standard Life, Halifax and Intelligent Finance.0
