  • Just got a refund of £150.00 from above after changing my lender 2 years ago Im so happy thanks a lot Martin & Gang:money:
  • Read Martin's E Mail about these fees and decided to ring up my previous lenders. (Could'nt be bothered to write to them) Hey what do you know! The Abbey didn't keep me waiting as I expected and immediately informed me I had overpaid my exit fee by £126. Claim form on its way. 2 minutes I reckon it took.

Next I went further back and rang the Halifax who we mortgaged with in 1999- just on the off chance we might have overpaid there too. Another 2 minutes and anothr £50 quid on its way. Easy peasy. You don't have to get stroppy just say 'I'm ringing to see if I have overpaid on my exit fees' They have all the figures at their fingertips it seems.

I'll let you all know how long it takes for the cheque to drop through the letter box.

Don't see the point anymore in offering advice to people who only want to be agreed with...
  • We followed Martin's instructions, sending letter as per his draft. Had a reply today, advising to phone the Woolwich and bingo the money plus 4% interest is winging its way into my bank account. Well done to the Woolwich Thanks for the info.:T
  • I sent off the draft letter Martin supplies on his site to the Halifax as we remortgaged last year. They charged us £225 Exit Fees and although I had no original paperwork with the original agreement fee on, I again used Martins info which informed me that 5 years ago the Halifax charged £125 which was when we first entered into our Mortgage agreement with the Halifax. So I did slightly adapt the draft letter and got a reply approx 14 days later informing me that I could have £100 back - result!!

    Thanks again Martin!!!:T
  • I wrote to the Halifax and Abbey, the former said I was charged as per the original contract, but I today received a cheque for £126 from Abbey..good return on the price of 3 stamps..

Sent the template letter to the Cheltenham and Gloucester on Tuesday informing them that I had recently been charged £225 as a MEAF and that the fee quoted when I took the mortgage out was only £50.

Recieved a reply today saying that they would refund me £125 plus interest as I had 2 mortgage accounts and that each should have been subject to a £50 admin fee, therefore I had only overpaid by £125.

    In a seperate envelope I received a cheque for £127.11 !!!

So, top marks to C & G for their ultra fast response, however I think I may as well query the double £50 element because although I did have 2 mortgages, one repayment, one endowment, they were on the same property and were always treated as one mortgage account throughout the life of the mortgage.

If what they are saying was correct, surely they would have tried to charge me 2 x £225 when I repaid the mortgage last year.

I think it's quite possible that, at some point in time, C&G changed from their rather unfair position of charging one fee per sub-account to one of charging one fee per main account, and hence both the £50x2 and the £225x1 were what they considered appropriate at the time.

In other words, the £125 refund may well be correct.
  • Cheers ; can't believe how simple this has been ; letter sent to Coventry last week claiming £100 difference between £95 fee quoted in 2000 and £195 fee charged when remortgaged last year; got cheque back this morning; thanks again
  • Just a quick note to let members know that I paid off my Halifax mortgate 2 years ago. After using Martins letters I made a claim and have received £115 by cheque. The system does work
