I have some sort of feeling that C&G charged an MEAF per sub-account, not per main account, meaning that there would have been an extra MEAF on each home improvement further advance. But for each such sub-account, the fee agreed at the start of the further advance would be the relevant fee for the time you closed it, and you need to see whether the amount increased. Earlier in the main MEAF thread (not this one - another sticky) is a post I made re a thisismoney table of MEAFs for each lender. Have a search for it!
  • Hi, a newbie here.
Just thought I’d share the great news on the success of reclaiming 2 MEAF from Birmingham Midhsires. It took 2 letters (downloaded from this site ;-) ) for them to repay the entire charges along with interest! Thank you to all the posts that inspired me to push this along. Abbey have partially offered a refund, which has been turned down and am negotiating a better offer. Bank Of Scotland are playing hard ball! Watch this space.

  • Hi there, claiming mortage exit fees is simple and it works!

I repaid a 4 year mortgage with the Alliance & leicester in 2005. I made a two minute phone call to A&L using Martin's advice :money: and 3 days later I received a cheque for £220. I got my mum to phone her mortage company, Abbey for a mortgage she repaid around 2005. Within a week, after she completed a form that they asked her to complete, she received a cheque for £126. It was really as easy as making a simple phone call. These two companies are certainly prepared for these claims, there were no awkward questions, just straightforward information regarding the simple process for claiming.

If you repaid a mortgage of at least 3 years around 2005, CLAIM NOW!!! It is simple and it's your money to spend on what you like. :j

    Hi

I have had mortgages with the following companies:

    Halifax - 1990-1995
    Norwich and Peterbrogh - 1995-1997
    Northern Rock 1997-2001
    Nationwide - 2001-2004

At most I have mortgage account numbers but don't think I have details of mortgage exit fees. Is it worth sending a general letter to each asking for details and stating my intent?

    Thanks
    MM

The Halifax, N&P and NR ones are strictly out of time, as they were redeemed over 6 years ago. Additionally, the increases in MEAFs on those, over those time periods, will probably be very small.

The major increases the lenders imposed occurred from around 2003 onwards.

The only one I would personally pursue would be Nationwide. I can't remember when they introduced their MEAF but there was a period during which they charged nothing.

Ah, OK - cheers fella. Think I'll just leave it then. Good to check out though as always interested in a bit of cash-back! :rotfl:
  • Phoned Abbey and they sent me 'mortgage repayment fee enquiry form'. Why they want me to give them my mortgage details is odd as they must have them - delaying tactic?

When I first took out the mortgage the redemption fee was £99. I changed the mortgage 2 years later and the paperwork states £225. Does this mean, as they told me, I cannot reclaim any of these fees?

I assume if I fill in the form with the above details that is what they will say.

    Any advice?

If £225 is what you ultimately paid, then NO you are not entitled to anything as you've paid what was due.

I phoned Cheltenham & Gloucester took a couple of minutes, I had my old mortgage ref. I had been charged £225 should only have been £50. I received a cheque for £206.72 WITHIN 2 DAYS
