What a mortgage repayment fee covers (as far as I am aware) is a pre-printed form (DS1 or usually now an END1 - you can look these up on Land Registry website) which is very straightforward for the lender to complete as the details are usually filled in and sent to the lender by the solicitor. All the lender has to do is check and sign it and send it back to solicitor or notify the Land Registry electronically in case of END. This truly is money for jam! I very much doubt in real terms it actually costs anything near £225 to deal with.
many thanks for your reply. the info has been very helpful!0 -
Thank you MSE
Received a cheque for £60.00 from the Halifax - the difference between the contract and MEAF charged. Have just sent a letter requesting £21.00 in interest as the Halifax said they "didn't think they'd paid interest out before". Good at charging it though, aren't they?

We have just received a letter from the Halifax offering us £35 (we need to sign a form to accept it), problem is I have no paperwork to check what we originally paid.. its better than nothing at all. We also got £220 from A & L on a more recent mortgage so result all round.
Does anyone know how far you can go back? has a mortage with Abbey with was redeemed in 95/96! Has anyone gone back that far? Thanks
Thanks Martin.0 -
I have just received a cheque for £175 from Abbey National. I was charged £225 exit fee for a mortgage that originally started with National & Provincial and later was taken over by the Abbey National, I couldn't find out how much I was originally quoted but suggested £50 (info from this site). I was sent a form to fill in and about a week later received my cheque without any problems at all. Thanks Martin.0

Hi I told a colleague at work about this and she is getting £140 back from Nat West thank you so much, I will keep passing on the good word0

katies mum Legally you can only go back 6 years. The amount you would have paid in 1995/96 would have been trivial, so any claim would be a fraction of a trivial amount. I shouldn't bother.0

We had a Woolwich mortgage and getting a refund on our exit fee has just been a constant item on our 'to do list' for the last 18months. So today I decided to do something about it once and for all and phoned the number given on this site.
Woolwich have a dedicated line so it couldn't be easier. They gave me a no quibble refund including interest which will be credited to our account within 3-5 working days.
Why didn't I do this sooner?!:j
Thanks for this brilliant website moneysavingexpert.com!:T0 -

They are sending a cheque for £175 (exit 2005) thank you Martin Lewis.0 -
Hi folks,
I've had quite a bit of success with my MEFS (which all went back over the last 5 years so I didnt even have the paperwork for any of them!)
C & G:
They charged me £225 and refunded me £140 + interest - they did this following a simple telephone conversation
My next one was with RBS:
they were not so straight forward. First I made phone call and they said that becuase I'd signed a contract that agreed to pay £225 MEAF they were not willing to refund anything.
I then used the 'millitant letter' provided on this website, and they still persisted with the same line of arguement.
My third letter to them stated that they had been unable to justify their charge of £225 - despite me agreeing to pay this, so I continued to argue that the charge was unjust, I then concluded the letter with a threat of the small claims court - to which they responded that they'd done a BACS payment to my a/c for £175! Its still perhaps a bit steep (£50) for a bit of a made up admin charge - but Im happy with that!
Thanks guys!
PS: My partner also got £90 cheque the other day for his MEAF with the Chelsea - although Im not sure what he was originally charged....... just goes to show its pretty easy when you put your mind to it0
