Just wanted to report, after receiving Martins' email I have successfully reclaimed £160 from BBBS, they charged £235 but the terms and conditions when I applied (1997) were redemption charge £75 and deeds release £0.

Thank you! Hope this helps someone else.
  • Made a 3 minute call to Halifax and received settlement cheque for £35.00 overcharge within 3 days. All thanks to MSE!

  • Thankyou. I remortgaged from the Halifax, made a call using the number listed on this site and have now received a cheque for £100. It took 2 minutes to make the call, what a great result!:j

  • I managed to claim back Mortgage Exit charges from Northern Rock recently.

Took out in mortgage in 1998, changed mortgages in 2005.

    I was charged £250 in 2005 but apparently quoted £130 in 1998.

Sent a letter off, received form back to sign which I did. Got cheque back in the post for £120. Very nice. Whole process took less than 2 weeks.

Thanks again because if I had not found this site I never would have known.

  • After reading your website I rang Alliance and Leicester BS and said I wanted to reclaim from when we refixed our mortgage three years ago and the young lady took the details and a cheque came through the post for £220! - the difference between what the charge was on taking the mortgage out and when it ended! No form - no hassle - well done Martin! I'm about to contact Nat West next and hope they will be as good in giving us back the money they have taken off us previous to that one. Watch this space......

    Well done you,
Let us no how you go on with natwest...rbscotland as it now is.
We took an endowment mortgage with them in 1993, we didnt realize how it would end up.

We have already put a claim in but the ombusman refused us, saying they were on the banks side because we had plenty of warnings.
We went went with one of those free soliciters.
our mortgage finishes in 3 yrs and we will be owing a few thousand.

What should i do? advice please, my husband is nearly 62 and i'm nearly 60.

I contacted Abbey National but wasnt expecting anything really as I had only been charged £99. They sent a form which I filled in and returned and y'day I got a chq for £4. Not a lot I know, but more than I was expecting and better in my shallow pocket than their deeeeeeep ones ;) AND totally hassle free to boot!

    Thanks Martin
  • Just wanted to add a big thank you Martin. We got £125 back from Abbey who overcharged us for our previous mortgage exit fee and it came through just before we went on holiday! I think you must be becoming a modern day Saint!!!!! How do the b***ards get away with it?
    Cheers

Could you switch to a part repayement/endowment mortgage? I did that a few years ago when in a similar situation to you and although it meant paying more per month, at least I wasn't left with a major headache when paying off the mortgage. You should be alright if at least one of you is still working. Good luck.
