Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

Yes you can claim these charges back, works the same as bank charges, been there done it a few times now. Of course they will try and discourage you, but don't give up.I don't know the answer to be quite honest, I would suggest posting this query in the reclaiming forum. They're the experts on this sort of thing.0

Well impressed with Woolwich - when they eventually answered call - once I'd given my redeemed account number, within seconds I was told how much was due to me (£47.50) and that it would be paid into my bank account!
Halifax were efficient too once I'd given all details, they completed a form and are sending me a cheque for £25.
However, Bank of Scotland not so efficient - passed on to 3 different departments as they couldn't recognise my account number before finally identifying it, all they will do is pass info onto their customer services who inturn will notify me in writing if I am due a refund.0 -
Just rang the Barclays dedicated line and they say that I never paid an exit fee in the first place! This mortgage was paid off early in 2002 and originally taken out around 1996. The paperwork upon closure lists various settlement figures for a month and states underneath that the figures include the following where appropriate:-- amount of mortgage outstanding- interest at the approp rate upto the repayment date-any early repayment interest and/or admin feeSo, seeing I do not have the original paperwork when the mortgage was taken out - just the repayment statement, do I assume they are telling the truth?! or could a MEAF be undercover within the whole settlement figure as an admin fee? When I asked them this they just said that a MEAF had never been paid.Sorry to sound so untrusting but just about to go to court with Barclays over unfair bank charges and they are denying ever receiving any of my letters and statements!0

I tried for over 45 minutes to contact the Woolwich on the telephone number I had but got cut off when I spoke to an adviser. I have just used the dedicated number on your website and got through straight away. I spoke to a very helpful gentleman who stated I have been overcharged by £180 when I paid off my mortgage last year and I would receive a payment direct to my bank account of £189.78 within 7 working days!
Thanks Martin for a great tip.0 -
I rang Barclays Bank today using the details supplied on this site. I was very disappointed to find that the £150 I paid in June 2000 was the amount that I agreed to pay when the mortgage was taken out in 1986. I can't believe that I was stupid enough to agree to such a large amount back then, especially as I had just finished working for Barclays.
It may be useful to specify in your table of previous costs, the difference between the Woolwich, which charged £50 10 years ago and Barclays, who it appears, charged £150.
I moved my account when I repaid my mortgage as I was annoyed that I had to pay the extortionate amount of £150 to pay back what I owed.
Good luck to everyone else attempting a refund.0 -
Just used the Woolwich dedicated number, got through straight away and have been refunded £132.50. The only details they wanted were name, address, DOB, and account number.0

can anybody tell me why we are charged an EARLY REPAYMENT CHARGE? which is usually thousands of pounds.
It appears we are being PENALISED for paying / redeeming ahead of time. this just cannot be right.0 -

our newsagents might as well charge extra if we pay our delivery bill early.
