Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

I had been meaning to pull out my fully paid up mortgage paperwork for months - just bit the bullet and after a 2 minute phone call to SLB they confirmed I should not have been charged what they listed as their 'Redemption Discharge Fee' of £ 150.00 and to expect a cheque in the post for the full refund within a month :T
Not sure if I am meant to post the phone number but I will keep it to hand in case anyone wants to email me for it

I held a mortgage with the Woolwich between July 1990 and September 1999. Although I had disposed of all my paperwork and did not have the account number, the full address of the property, along with my date of birth was sufficient for the helpline to identify that I am due a refund of £30 plus interest (My contract said £35 exit fee, they charged me £65). All I need to do is send them a certified copy of my marriage certificate for my name change -a local branch of Barclays can photocopy it and stamp it for me). Thanks Martin!0

Just rung Abbey & Yorkshire BS.
Slightly different approach from each:
Yorkshire BS looked it all up there & then. Seemed reluctant to tell me much over the phone, but said they would send all the details out in the post. Eventually managed to gleem that I'd paid a £38.50 Deeds Production Fee (which they didn't seem to think I'd be getting any refunds on - is this right?) and a £55 Sealing Fee (which apparently should have been £35), so all in all I think I'll be getting a cheque for £20. Not a fantastic result, but better than nothing, I suppose. We'll see what happens though...
Abbey just said they'd send out a form for me to fill in & return.
I'll keep you all updated.SKIPS STONES FOR FUDGE0 -

Abbey are being a total pain! I wrote to them giving all details (which they chose to ignore) Then sent me a form to sign (didn't have to put any other details on) Then sent a cheque, not relating to the amount owed! I say they are being a pain because they seem to have this automated system that no matter what you are requesting you get the same form etc. Then they make if a lttle difficult to find the correct address to retun the form to, no envelope etc. But I supose if this puts of just say, 10% of people that loads more maoney in Abbeys coffers!!!MFW - We've only gone and blooming done it!May 2013:j0 -
Hi. I phoned Allaince & Liecester about a previous mortage we had back in 2004. I just gave my old account number and address and told them I would like my Fees looking into and was told that this would be done in approx 3 weeks. I recived a letter and cheque for £220 in the post today 1 and 1/2 weeks later.
Cheers Martin Great work.0 -

Wow
I can't believe this. I had the MSE email sat in my inbox for a couple of weeks and have just had a quick look.
I read about the MEAF and decided to call Woolwich about a mortgage I cleared with them about 2 years ago.
Luckily the website gave a direct number for a specific department dealing with them.
I was on the phone (to a freephone number) for 5 minutes and 28 seconds and in that time the lady advised that I will be entitled to £111.08.
She took bank details and advised it will be in the account in the next 3 - 5 working days.
I can't believe it. I never even knew about these until about 10 minutes ago.
I have now called Sainsburys (after finding a number on the website) and the lady advised they will look into the account and I should hear back in 3-5 days with a letter about wether or not I have a claim.
Can't believe it.
Thank you MSE, would never ever have known about it. Good luck to all.

HI
I was told about reclaiming the MEAF by a friend who had a full refund from Nat West. I wrote to B & W to claim mine back. Received a reply offering £45.00 (I paid £195, contract I signed was for £150)and a letter explaining what the costs were for etc I wrote back saying that I also paid £90.00 redemption fees, surley this covered the costs etc and wouldnt £50.00 be more reasonable MEAF fee. Today (about 1 week after my last letter) I received an offer of £145.00 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!yahay
Good luck to everyone!!!!!!0 -

Just rang Yorkshire BS. Spoke with someone about the mortgage I had from Jan 2003 until Jan 2005. Fee went from £100 to £199, they've just agreed to send me £99! Thanks once again Martin.
