IWith regard to the argos / dixons statement, I go back to my original question. Is the seller a private or business seller? If he is a private seller this is the equivalent of buying it off a bloke in a pub. It may be new and unused but it doesn't have any guarantee. If he is a business seller then yes you have those same rights.

Not on ebay it isn't if paypal was used.

If you feel the item was not as described then a paypal SNAD claim will almost guarantee that paypal will find in a buyers favour and ask them to return the item for a full refund.

  • vlc for Android is still in development, I would still recommend mobo player (unless you are able to compile source code.)
  • Thanks for the advice, I am going to escalate the claim with Ebay, so that a decision can be made on it, but I have to wait 10 days, until I can do this

If they do not side in my favour, I may need to try a few of the suggestions mentioned here, but I want to see if I can get my money back first, because at the end of the day, I have been sold something that does not work as it should do.

  • OH has one of these gadgets and had to download certain things onto it after he purchased it. It's just one of those things....

I don't think it is anything to do with the product, sounds like a lack of understanding on how to use the product, not the sellers fault. So it' more a case you changing your mind and now the seller potentially will end up with a product that isn't brand new, unopened etc..
  • I disagree, before I bought this archos 7, I had an archos 605 wifi, and although I had to pay another £25 to buy a browser plug in, I knew this in advance of buying it, so I understand that archos do charge for additional plug ins (or used to), but I did not have to install any video player. I would expect it to perform the core functions of video/photo/music, straight out of the box.

I know there is a video player because when I first opened it there were some pre-installed video files that played fine.

This might be easily resolved if I was to load on some more software or updates, but I don’t see why I should go to the trouble of messing about when I don’t know what I am doing, I could make it worse.

I’ve read the manual and its doesn’t say anything about downloading software before you can play videos.

it will probably only play certain types of files tho. Not windows media player files. Different OS. Therefore the advice is correct in the fact that you may need to instal a different media player. Mobo is a free app and would try that before the 10 days are up, just to see if it helps with this kind of problem

This is one of those things that really annoys me, as someone who works in IT. People go out and buy computer equipment without doing any real research or having any real knowledge of what they're doing, and then complain when things don't work out as they thought they might.

If the Archos 7 could, and still can, play the pre-installed video files, then the problem is not with the tablet, but with the files you're trying to play, as has been mentioned previously.

If you're not prepared to learn about something you've bought, then I sugest you don't bother in the future.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but you wouldn't buy a car and try and drive it before you had driving leassons, so why expect to be able to 'drive' a computer without any prior knowledge???

To try and be helpful. If you look at the loaded applications on the tablet, you should see one called 'Market'. Open this and then search for 'Mobo'. You should then see Mobo Video Player Pro in the list. Select this and then there should be an option to 'Download'. Press this. You will then be asked to 'Accept & Download' the permissions. Press this. The program will then start to download and then install. Once installed, look in your apps for Mobo and run it. You really can not 'make things worse' just by doing this, honestly you can't!

Surely it must be worth trying this before going to the hassle of returning it?

    *** Edit ***
Just done some Googling. It appears that there is a program called AppsLib that can also be used to download programs, so try this if you can't find the Market.

Agree with melliot1963 entirely this is a quote from an online review
Although the screen isn't the best, there's no denying that playing back your video files on the Archos 7 is good. It supports a range of common formats - AVI, MPEG4, MKV, MOV and FLV - although in our test files we found the normal codec oddities – MPEG4's that didn't play, FLV as audio only, etc. We did get it to play 720p MPEG4 files, although lipsync was sometimes a problem, as the frame rate slowed. You'll have to figure out the codecs that will work for you and ensure that you have files in the correct format to get the best out of the Archos 7.
Note the bit in bold,it's certainly worth downloading MOBO as suggested for a decent media player.
  • thanks melliott1963, i will try and do that tonight, and let you knwo how i get on.
