hi i bought a brand new unopened, unused, undamaged archos 7 tablet off ebay on the 25th october, for £83.00 and when it arrived i charged it switched it on and played some of the pre-installed media and it seemed to work ok.
but i have just come to use it for the first time, so transferred some music photos and video on to it, and the video files do not play properly, i cant get any picure and the sound is just a loud noise.
i have contacted the seller on ebay and explained this but he has refused to refund me because i didnt tell him about this as soon as i got it,
i have filed a dispute case with ebay but am not overly confident i will get me money back
i paid with paypal, and the sellers return policy was they do not accept returns.
is there anything else i can do.

If you file a SNAD then you will be asked to return it at your cost. Use Royal Mail Special Delivery or the equivalent as proof of delivery and you will get a full refund of the payment you made.0

Most would have advised to open the dispute with Paypal rather than eBay, but that ship has sailed.
A lot will depend on whether the seller is a private seller or a business seller? It may sometimes seem like I can't spell, I can, I just can't type0 -
You need to update the codecs to play the video files.
Tons of different video formats. Your need the right codecs to play them.
Probably nothing wrong with it.
Try a small media player called VLC, Google it. Free and plays many formats.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
That's a fair point forgotmyname0

i have been trying to resolve with the seller but to no avail so will go down the paypal route now, i am still within the timescale of 45 days.
codecs? the files i have been trying to play are avi and wma, and i would not expect to buy a new device, of any kind, that promises to play video files then discover i had to mess about trying to download codecs to play them.
i had an archos 605 before buying this and could play all my files on this no problem.
i am in the wrong here? i bought something, paid for it, and when i went to use it it would not function properly, surely i should be able to have some comeback, if i bought this from argos or dixons they would give me a refund wouldnt they?its only a bargain, if you need it or will use it.

I don't think forgotmyname is saying you are in the wrong. He is advising you that it may not be faulty. Many players do not support all codecs and need to be updated straight from the box.
Think about the length of time that passes between a product being manufactured and it landing on your doorstep. By definition in this fast moving world nothing is truly up to date. Also when manufacturer's release a next generation item it isn't always backwards compatible, so codecs need to be updated to play older files on a new machine.
With regard to the argos / dixons statement, I go back to my original question. Is the seller a private or business seller? If he is a private seller this is the equivalent of buying it off a bloke in a pub. It may be new and unused but it doesn't have any guarantee. If he is a business seller then yes you have those same rights. It may sometimes seem like I can't spell, I can, I just can't type0 -
If the OS is Android then you will need a media player. wma is windows and many avi files use codecs to keep the file size down. Go to the android market and download mobo player. That should fix your probs0

so just to clarify, i may need to install certain codecs to play avi files and wma files, how can i find out which one's i need, i'm not a tecnical wizard,
and if i download a different video player like mobo, (i am assuming i have to do this through the internet on the archos or can i download it on my pc and transfer it over onto the archos) would the archos tablet support this player?its only a bargain, if you need it or will use it.

Yep, dont worry about finding which codecs you need, the player will already have them. Its just the player you need to download. Yep, mobo video player is supported on all android systems. If you have wireless internet try and join the archos to your network, then goto the "market" should have an icon on your archos already (you will need a gmail account if you dont already have one)
Just shout if you get stuck0 -
AVI can be many different formats, DIVx can be saved as an AVI.
The issue is with the video bitrates, Imagine taking 100 photo's with the same camera, All the same size.
1 picture = 1mb so that's 100mb if you joint them to create a video.
Bit large so you use different codecs to shrink the picture, One codec may just shrink the size to 75% of th original
to cut down on the space needed.
Another codec may leave the original size but reduce each picture quality to a constant 75%, So the picture is not quite as sharp.
Then another codec can look at each picture and decide how much to shrink that down, A lot of sky or a single colour can reduce
that picture down quite a lot say 25% of the original size. But the next picture maybe rich in detail and only reduce by 10%.
As i already said download VLC player, It will play most video's. Also its possible those video's are corrupt.
Without going into specs it could be a few other things. Filesystem format, Filesize limits etc..Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
