I have re-read The Owl Service many times GQ, and it still surprises me. I put my love of Wales down to The Owl Service and it's lyrical magic, the lady made of flowers that wanted to be owls...
Sitting down to a lovely night of David Bowie on BBC4Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
My mind is racing now kidcat but so relieved that DS is going to get the schooling he needs. And well done that man for sorting out going back to work.
Lets hope your shoulders feel a little lighter in the coming weeks.
I have never heard of The Owl Service0 -
Thank you so much for all your hugs. I filled in the form and sent it straight back (after scanning my replies) so will just have to wait. Luckily I have the Storecupboard of Doom. I'm feeling a bit calmer now and have hoovered too! The feeling low thing is due to an ongoing situation that I am just going to have to learn how to cope with but sometimes it gets overwhelming.
All your lovely replies really touched me. Thank you so much.
Kidcat, glad to hear things are looking up for you. About time your DS had some decent help at school, it's been a long time coming.
Unixgirl I hope you find a job soon. It's hard at the moment. I am looking but hopefully will be able to go back to the notetaking when the universities start again in September, although there are never any guarantees. I don't know anything about your situation, but if you have a degree, readable handwriting and can spell, it might be worth contacting the disability unit if there is a university nearby, to see if they need notetakers. They often recruit over the summer for the next academic session. You might be able to combine it with another part-time job. Might be worth a try.
Enid Blyton books - I loved them and read them all, I think. Oh, I so wanted to be Bill from Mallory Towers, with her horse - Thunder, was it? And her seven (?) brothers lol! Or was that St Claire's? I used to try having midnight feasts with my sister but she was too scared of being caught by Mum and Dad to join in properly :rotfl:. Lashings and lashings of ginger beer ..... and I was desperate for a dog like Timmy .....
ETA - so how come I ended up with Bruno?!Aspire not to have more but to be more.

Kidcat, excellent news all round!
Fuddle, I've never heard of the Owl Service either, but if it's a bit magical then it probably isn't for me. But I will Google.
Smiley, hugs and more hugs.0 -

I know far too much about this, could have it as my specialist subject on Mastermind:o0 -
Oh Kidcat that is fantastic news - I know it won't be easy for hubby but am sure once he is been back a week or two he will wonder why on earth he didn't go back sooner, or realise if he wants a different job then he has to do more than sit at home getting sick notes.......

I've read "The wierdstone of Brisingaman" but didn't remember it - even when I read the synopsis on makeitup-pedia just now. Don't think I've read the owl service though.
One of my favourite books from childhood is a book called "The Viaduct" by Roy Brown, where a boy gets transported back to the early days of steam railways. And another was "Knights of the Cardboard Castle" by Elizabeth Beresford. I think both were probably boys books I acquired from my brother but I really loved them. HOwever it really is Chalet School for me - I find them a comfort read now.
Had a terribly boring day at work today - made worse as I don't normally work Fridays. I now have the weekend to prepare for my trip to Canada next week. I am in the "really don't want to go phase" of going. I am also trying to negotiate a very short term contract in South Korea. My carbon footprint this year is shocking! The bad news is that it is forecast rain next week in Montreal - can't even escape it thousands of miles away.:(
DD had cooked a 3 course dinner for us tonight though, which was lovely. Am quite liking her not being at schoolShe is playing at being housekeeper next week while I am away - doing most of the cooking and stacking dishwasher, odd load of laundry etc to help out OH. She is going to be paid. I don't think I have to worry about her fending for herself when she leaves home. Her job today was to go through all of her school books for the past 5 years and decide which were to be kept and which to be recycled. THere are now 3 separate piles. The recycled / throw / donate pile is the largest! :T
Talking of school, DS brought home his report. It was briliant - the best we have ever had from him. Every subject was at or above target, except for art and drama and we know he has no aptitude for either of those! Maths and science particularly were well above target. It seems the private tuition is paying off. He has always been an average student at best - but it seems now he could be better than that. Am very proud of him - it is hard for him as he knows his sister is likely to end up with mostly A / A* grades.
The garden is going to have to fend for itself while I am away - I ought to try to weed a little before I go. My runner beans are at the top of their poles (sorry, GQ) but something has been at my borlotti beans. I have about 3 strawberries and a few more tomato flowers and one cucumber. My potatoes though are going nuts!
Right I'll have a wander round the web and turn in for the night. S'laters allI wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
My favourite books as a child included the Weirdstone of Brisingamen and The Little Grey Men plus all the Narnia books - hours and hours of otherworld fantasy
Very  this morning as I have received a bill for money I don't owe - AGAIN! I have had verbal assurances from HMRC that my account is up to date but they must be banking with NatWest. Going to go to the tax office in person next week to sort it out - an expensive unnecessary trip to town
Hugs for all in need and congrats to Kidcat on finally getting some progress re OH/school."Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0 -

I still regularly re-read Chalet School books and other books that EBD wrote. Have you been on any of the Chalet School forums or societies? There are a lot of us about. Some of us meet up regularly as well
Kidcat so glad your DS is nearer to getting the help and support from school that he should be having.0
