Thanks
Hi Rainbow
I soak them overnight, then boil them for a couple of hours until they're tender. No salt.
If you cook them all at once, you can freeze some and then they're ready for next time, it makes it a bit more economical.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
Soak overnight, cook for 40 minutes or as long as it takes (depends on age). Keep salt way from pulses, it makes them tough.0

I bought one a week when they were £1 each in Mr A. OH tried to object - but the way prices are going up, I figured it was worth it. He has had to agree now they are £2 (and more) each.
They are tucked away in my larder with the 60-odd tins of baked beans and two full trays of tinned tomatoes .
Old post, sorrybut just wanted to say that I remember when Fray Bentos Pies DIDN'T give me indigestion, when they had more than 3 tiny cubes of 'meat' and a piece of gristle, had decent amount of gravy, and wasn't all air and goo....
I didn't have a FB pie for about 15 years, and then last year my friend served a 'beef' one to me. I was ill the whole next day
I was the same with SPAM - got a voucher off here for a free can, was dead pleased cos I used to love it....but then found it was SO salty and greasy that I can't ever touch that again
Oh the joys of getting older and slowly needing to revert back to babyfood...0 -
There was a big campaign for saving seeds a while ago as more and more seeds that are sold are the F1 hybrids (or whatever) and you can't use seed from them the following year
YES YOU CAN! It's just that the produce might not be what you were expecting, it may look more like one or other of the parents (F1 hybrids have 2 or more parents) - but you CAN get produce from most F1s0 -
Just an update for you all. DD1 had to go back to the hospital for more blood tests to recheck her hormone levels. They should have doubled in 48 hours. They have tripled!
We are going for another scan this morning. Amazing how it will be relevent two days after the useless/waste of time one! (Might get to meet nasty doctor too)
So either we are looking at wrong dates, ( probably not, GP has been doing pregnancy tests every two weeks due to abdominal pain) or multiple births! Not out of the realms of possibility because my other DD has four year old twins! It's going to be an interesting morning!:rotfl:
Had a 'me' day yesterday. No cleaning or decorating just cooking. Silly, but sometimes cooking feels like a 'fix' to me. Four hours later I had:- 12 smoked mackerel fishcakes, 3 vegetable lasagnes, 1 beef enchiladas, 1 beef burritos, and a huge moussaka. Was kna**ered but really chuffed. Freezer is a happy bunny too.
Plan today was to do the detested cleaning but I think that will be on hold. Am so devestated!:rotfl: It will be there when I am not!Give us the strength to encounter that which is to come, that we may be brave in peril, constant in tribulation, temparate in wrath, and in all changes of fortune, and down to the gates of death, loyal and loving to one another.”0 -
Good luck with DD and the hospital Meme, whether it turns out to be twins or triplets
Thanks to your list of cooked items, I just added fishcakes to my list of "can-eat"s. Heck of a cookoff you had there.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
Morning all
Welcome back SoftstuffIt's great to see you posting again.
meme30 I hope your DD's scan goes well and fingers crossed you see a different Dr today.
mardatha I hope you get a diagnosis soon
Well I'm planning another easy day today in the hope my blood pressure goes down. I went to the gym yesterday morning and now regret it. I managed to get myself home and went straight to bed. 4 hours later my blood pressure was still 151/101  I got up to make pizza dough and then went back to bed. DS1 and DS2 were lovely and took over making dinner. DS1 managed to use a huge amount of cheese, but I'm not complaining. I was grateful to be fed. The thing is I have no idea why my blood pressure is so high. Oh well, it will go down again soon.
The house is a tip and it's only been a day without me doing anything, so it has to start behaving soon.
Enough moaning from me....where is GQ's nurse with a bucket of tea when you need her????
Take care everyone xxx0 -
SDG, I'm sending Nursie around to your place directly. I imagine her as a cross between Nurse Gladys Emanuel from Open All Hours and Nurse Rached. She almost certainly is a large and sarcastic lady in a black Morris Minor. Don't give her any lip, because you'll get it back, with interest.:rotfl:And possibly a clout upside the head if you're cheeky, that woman is a tartar.
Nothing much to report from my neck of the woods. Have been going to work and coming home again and plan to do more of the same again today. Bor-ringggg.I watched something on YouTube yesterday. Only possible since switching to broadband. Are people's lips and the audio always out of sync? I was as entranced as a kid at crimble. Like I've said before, I don't get out much............
Wotcher r.a.i.n.b.o.w nice to see you again.
OK, gotta fly, I'm required to go to the salt mine for a few hours. ((hugs)) for your DD, meme30.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

SDG31000 - I'll have to send my daughter round! A couple of weeks ago I was in A&E and my BP went up to approx 200/110, and the machine bleeped its head off every time it was checked. Then DD turned up - and within 15 mins it was 130/70!
Seriously though, you're right to rest up. Do take care of yourself.
I've just got an appointment through for an echocardiogram - bad news is I can't have tea, coffee or chocolate (or several of my medications) for 24 hours before the test! How will I survive?!
Must now go and hang out the washing - lovely sunny day here. Have a good day everyone.Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!0 -
I remember GreyQueen posting about this price hike a few weeks ago and wanted to post this where I thought she would see it.
Packets of own brand instant custard powder which went up recently from 6p to 15p have gone back down to 6p at Asda and Tesco. They are still 15p at JS (probably not for long though when they discover the other 2 stores have reduced their price).0
