Oh boy, have just ordered two laptops for the kids birthdays next month, have got an exceptional price and offer but I think OH will blow a gasket when he finds out - although in fairness last time we discussed it he said - you go ahead do whatever, so I have! Will need to be very careful with spends for rest of month as I still have the party food to buy and the entertainer for DD party to pay. Dad got the party boxes out for me last week so they are all ready and I plan on doing exactly as last year, make up one box per child and then have plenty of drinks on offer in pop top bottles. Have hired a gym for DS birthday and the instructor works with the local autistic group so is ideal, its the group DS has just started attending and another of his friends go too, so I think it will be ideal - its costing more per head than DD as he has only a few friends but I am hoping its worth it for the experienced trainer and the familiar environment.

BIg Jenny - have decided to wait until tomorrow and try the basin method for the semolina - kids think I am mad they wont eat anything like that at all, they wont even consider rice pudding :eek:- where did I go wrong??:rotfl:

Sorry to hear the cinema was full. Our local does £1.50 seats for kids movies Sat & Sun morns. We always pre-book, worth the extra couple of pounds (4 tickets for £8.80, works out about a third of full price tickets) Can you do the same either on-line or popping into the cinema during the week?

Cant book online (its a brand new cinema having huge teething problems, very poorly trained staff and generally not very organised) but have organised tickets for tomorrows showing this morning - to be honest I had just completely overlooked the idea that everyone would have the same idea but at least I know better now. :)

Brisket today was yummy. Baby didn't want his spag bol, think he ate one mouthful whilst munching a breadstick but spat all the rest out. He loves finger food but I do worry his diet is a bit restricted. He won't drink formula so I have to give him it in his meals and I worry he isn't getting enough. He weaned himself off breastfeeding at 8 months when I was expecting to feed him until he was 12 months so that was a bit of a shock. But HV says he should be getting most of his nutrition from food now but he has the same old thing most days and worried there's not enough variety. Keep trying every day but it does get a bit wearing when he won't eat new things.

I have the same niggly worry about DS (9 months), he seems to be existing on a diet of bread, pastry, potato croquettes and carrot sticks at the moment (although he will drink formula by the gallon). It's a new experience for me as DD would eat absolutely anything as long as we fed her - due to the hypermobility in her fingers and her poor fine motor skills she didn't self feed until 21 months! DS is the complete opposite though, he didn't do the mashed stage at all just went straight on to proper solids but doesn't really want us to feed him he wants to do it himself so we're limited to what he can pick up. He's just tonight managed pasta but it has to be the twirls so he can get hold of it - penne doesn't work as it just shoots out of his hand! I figure he'll be fine and every week he adds a few more things and he's only wee so we'll get there.

If it helps on the baby-feeding-himself thing, I was always told by HV (my own are now 11 and 26 so I may be well out of date), that the more self-feeding the better. I also read a report on the BBC news saying that self-feeders may be less likely to have weight problems later in life. Mine weren't keen on me using a spoon on them, except for a few choo-choo-train mouthfuls, but would eventually handle a fork themselves on which I'd skewered something. I found with mine things like very lightly cooked carrot sticks went down well, individual peas (slow mealtimes those were) and things like breadsticks dipped in plain yoghurt. If you have the urge to try making your own oven-baked potato croquettes you can squidge other veg into them. Also cooking the pasta actually in the sauce will help it absorb other nutrients and flavours so you can introduce the flavours in the shape of familiar food. Neither of mine would eat mince or pieces of red meat, but would have tiny batons of chicken. I truly believe that if you eat with your kids and they see you enjoying all sorts of food this can really help some (not all obviously) potential picky eaters. I used to eat things like broccoli with my fingers and they'd see me, so when I offered them some they knew that I enjoyed it - table manners come much later!!! Good luck

Totally agree with you on sitting down with children when they eat. Worth it even if you are just keeping them company. 'Beating Grandma' has speeded up many a slow meal in our house! All toddlers go through faddy phases, the main thing is not to beat yourself up about it. Setting yourself targets on 'baby eating healthy' might work for you but toddlers just don't cooperate!. :rotfl:
Remember tinned/frozen veg have added vits and can be hidden in lots of things. Try and keep meal times stress free because as soon as they realise you're stressed 'your goose is cooked'! Nothing beats a stubborn toddler!

It was great when our girls were teenagers as well. Often had their friends or boyfriends eating with us. You learn a lot more about their lives by feeding them up and just listening to them chat. Made us feel a bit more connected. which was hard to achieve sometimes when they were doing the 'living in their bedroom stage'
Give us the strength to encounter that which is to come, that we may be brave in peril, constant in tribulation, temparate in wrath, and in all changes of fortune, and down to the gates of death, loyal and loving to one another.”

    Morning Campers :)

Gosh, it's very foggy here but it has definitely warmed up. In fact I was really toasty last night and didn't even need PJs which was a first!

I'm feeling exceptionally cheery today. I do hope this isn't insensitive in light of others troubles and things that have been going on, but I had a lovely gift yesterday and am looking forward to a long awaited holiday.

Yesterday we had lunch with OH's parents, his brother and sister-in-law. It was an early birthday meal as we are on holibobs next week (paid for by a refund I got on cancelled flights). OH's mum gave me the loveliest present ever - she has knitted the most beautiful royal purple little shrug/cardi edged with sparkly beads. It's truly beautiful and my new absolute favourite thing. The time and care she must have spent means so much. I'm so lucky as I love all of his family and they have totally taken me into their hearts as well. It means so much as my family simply consists of my mum (lost dad 4 years ago) and though she is a wonderful mother doesn't really 'do' big occasions or family type events. I've never had them as I've only ever had just my parents and am an only child. To feel such a welcomed part of a larger, happy unit is something I treasure.

On top of the wonderful cardi we had a delicious lunch and his mum made the hugest pile of her special profiteroles, which I know is laborious for her but they are my absolute favourite!

We were unsurprisingly stuffed when we got home, but I was a good OS girl, and made up fishcakes with the leftover braised cabbage from Saturday plus some smoked mackerel that needed using. We both have them for our lunch today :) OH has finished the wine rack and it looks fab!

I hope everyone is OK today and thawing out. Really really don't want it to be Monday. Have a really busy week at work ahead so best get my head down for it!

    Take care everyone xxx

I agree about eating together at the table. It is good for all the family and babies just get on with the eating if you ignore them as much as possible. The more attention the more fuss they make. One of my granddaughters would not be spoon fed and plates were just frizbeed across the room so DD put all her food on the well scrubbed highchair tray for months and baby just fed herself. Messy but she is a good eater now. She has glasses now and I wonder if being unable to see properly was part of the problem. Her tray was white so food would have been visible even if she could not see it clearly. She looks very cute in her glasses and has had to have baby ones even though she is over two now as her features are so small.

An American study years ago found that teen pregnancies were very unusual in families that ate together at the table. I think it may have been that everyone talked and got attention?

Entertaining babies I found loads of sites when I typed in activities for one year olds here is one, two, three to have a look at. If you type "activities for" and the age of the child there is a lot of information out there. You can make edible play dough (recipes on the net). Safe finger paints using food colouring and cornflour mixed together. Painting can be done in the bath, just turn the taps off tight for an older toddler, it is easily washed away when they are done. If a painting is worth preserving just use a piece of paper to take a print off it.
Edit to say you can take a photo of the picture too so you don't have clutter. That is what I am going to do with all the models my youngest has made the last few years the I can get rid of the models.
