I bought a massive green and purple cabbage at the market last week. Does anyone have any great recipes for cabbage as I dont usually buy them?0
-
CATBELLS - best cabbage recipe I know is to boil cabbage until cooked to your liking, drain it well then add a knob of butter/spread of your preference, goodly grinding of black pepper, the juice of half a lemon and 2 heaped tablespoons of creme fraiche/fromage frais/ soured cream or cream. Give it a good stir and pop back on heat for a couple of minutes. Its nummy and goes with most things. We had it last night with some slow cooked brisket and gravy and some new potatoes Mmmmmmmmmmm.........0

I currently like this, but I make it with whatever veg needs using up rather than just carrots. I've also been known to chop everything smaller, add more stock and some pasta to make a kind or ultra-quick minestrone.
This used to be my favourite cabbage recipe in my pre-low-fat days. It's a simple recipe but very tasty!
Smileyt I also second the soda-crystals for everyday cleaning and bicarb for tougher jobs. My OH enjoys cleaning the oven so I never have to do itBut then I love scrubbing out the bathroom, so I guess we're both just weirdos :rotfl:
I'm ebaying today, it's free listings day in case anyone didn't know. Which means with any luck I'll be able to get to my scanner again and scan that article in for you Smiley
MrsLurcherWalker Docs messages to Bruno make me LMAO :rotfl:
Yesterday we went to the farm shop and I made friends with the chickensI have been pleading with OH for some for years but he won't because they had them growing up and he says they're smelly. I try to explain they won't if I keep them properly but he won't even discuss it.
But anyway, the ones at the farm shop are the puffy buff-coloured ones with the fluffy feet (I think they're called pekins?) and they're quite tame. One of them was just coming up to investigate me a bit more when OH spooked it and it ran away. It looked so funny wobbling away with it's furry little feet waggling either side! OH laughed his head off and I said, if we had pet chicken they'd be really funny, you know it. And they'd give you eggs every day to show you how much they love you! And he gave me A Look but didn't actually say no chance. So I'm classing it as a partial victory and plotting my next move. :rotfl:
Hugs to everyone who wants or needs one (((hug))) xxx0 -
scrabbles That looks gorge-ous - thank you. I could have got loads of recipes from the net but I alwyas think a recommended one is the best! I was glad to see bacon as one of the ingredients too.
I'm so happy I just heard a rumbling noise in the loft and swallowed hard waiting for more running water noises through the ceiling but all I got was a running tap in the kitchen Checked the loft - all OK there. Going for a shower now and to marvel at the wonder of water:rotfl: and how I take it for granted.0 -

Thanks for this recipe Mrs Lurcherwalker. It looks like the kinda healthy option I tend to go for with creme fraiche rather than cream. I;m pretty much a pescatarian (if thats a word) so it might go with the piece of cod I got at the market the other day. Yumptious.
And because of my current circumstances
I LOVE WATER0 -
Hello all,
Belated happy birthday Gardenia.
Catbells - I love cabbage but OH allergic so don't do it very often as I have to do something else for him. One thing I love to do is to just cook cabbage in the water that clings to it when cooked, a bit of butter and some ground nutmeg with the lid on the pan - only takes a few short minutes - then serve with something really rich and creamy like potato daupinoise (sp?) or macaroni cheese. The combo of creamy and green and leafy works really well.
OH doing overtime til 2 so no 'Be nice to mummy day' today (boo, hiss) but it's a one off as he usually only does a couple of hours first thing but a colleague of his is off on paternity leave, his girlfriend just had twins! Very proud of myself as I made a start on both my essays last night (got 2 OU level 2 courses on the go and essays due in for both one on Friday, one next Friday!) and have a really clear plan for each of them. Will try to get another couple of paragraphs done on each later which mean I'm a good chunk there on the shorter one and made a really good start on the longer one.
Still not managing to get DD to keep her glasses on for more than a few minutes at a time but it's early days yet, she's only had them since Tuesday so today will be another day of repeatedly putting her glasses back on!
Hope you all well and hugs where needed.0 -
Love the chat between Doc and Bruno, hilarious. I used to send a letter from my dog to a friend's in the US each Xmas, I loved doing it, and the letters got longer each year, but Mrs Lurcherwalker, Doc's style is so funny he should write a book! ROTFLMAO :rotfl::rotfl:
Gardenia, 6 dinner Sid...:rotfl::rotfl: Enjoy the match! :T:T
Catbells, glad the water is sorted. I rarely cry, but when someone is kind to me, everything bubbles to the surface and I burst like a dam! My *big* birthday is next year and I am going to plan something, not sure what yet, but I have time! I hated reaching 50 but for some reason 60 doesn't bother me.
I find getting older brings with it new pressures; for instance all those older women on Dancing on Ice or Strictly, who always impress me with their energy and bodies, but then people's expectations of you are raised and although the young are under pressure, if things keep going on as they are, with cosmetic surgery and other face/body enhancing procedures, I will be 80 and still be expected to "look good for my age" or dance around with a leotard and smile fixed to my face! :rotfl:
A comment was made on Dancing on Ice about Rosemary Conley who is 65, the commentator said, " I don't expect there's many 65 year olds who could do what Rosemary is doing..." in a patronising tone. Everything is measured by how you look, what your physical ability is...whereas there are lots of 65 year olds, holding down jobs, supporting family, looking after grandchildren, but who probably couldn't ice skate. Not sure I'm clear on what I'm trying to say!
Stiltwalker, well done on your essays. I never had a plan, tried the mind mapping things, had copious notes but still winged it a lot of the time! Have only just realised I did the wrong modules because I wasn't in a thinking too far ahead mode as dealing with divorce etc. Hindsight is always 20/20. So glad I did it nonetheless.0 -
Have been talking to both DD's this week about food price rises. I think one of them thinks I am exaggerating how bad it may get. Neither has seen food spend become a major part of wage spend. They both realise things are more expensive and one is keeping store cupboard well stocked. The sceptic one has found she is just buying less food. Stock cupboard does not now exist! She buys only what she needs for that weeks meals. This means she spends less and does not impulse buy, which is good, but now has no stock of extra tins, cereals, pasta, rice etc! I can not fault her for not buying rubbish stuff but am past myself at thought of empty stock cupboard!
We are going to do a joint buy on approved foods in a couple of weeks so am hoping cupboard will benefit.
I found myself telling her about how expensive food shopping used to be. When DH and I got our first flat 30 years ago our food shopping bill was £30 a week! His whole weekly wage was only £60! It must sound unreal to the housewife who is only in her twenties ! :rotfl:Give us the strength to encounter that which is to come, that we may be brave in peril, constant in tribulation, temparate in wrath, and in all changes of fortune, and down to the gates of death, loyal and loving to one another.”0 -
