GQ I get the Dilbert strip every day in g@@gle reader, I swear I used to work in that office! :D

and someone (GQ?) mentioned Snuff, the new Pratchett a while ago? I've just finished it (borrowed my ds' copy so very OS) and its brilliant, Sybil is my hero

Snuff - can you elaborate please? DH is great Pratchett fan and another author of a similar type would be of great interest.

    many thanks

Sorry - didn't mean to call you Snuff:rotfl:

Morning Gang. Feeling like poo this morning, have a snuffle and sore throat, and I CANNOT be ill. I'm covering for someone at W**k tomorrow, and in myself Sat and Sun.

So I'm sitting here with the remains of my Ald! hair dye on my badger stripes, at least I think it's clearing my sinuses, in an attempt to gird myself.

Have a parcel to pick up from the post office later, the apparently tried to deliver it here yesterday and DD didn't hear the door - OH now tells me the the bell isn't working. I kind of assumed when he brandished a new bell push at me some time ago, he'd have fitted it? Apparently not...

I got a phone call from a neighbour/friend of my friend in London this morning saying that my friend is very low...she suffers from depression, and was sacked from work last year for being sick (NHS *eyeroll*) and of course money worries are now compounding everything. Last time I spoke to her she asked me if I could lend her money  which I am not in a position to do... Dunno how to play this one. She can be quite manipulative, I'd not be surprised to find she'd coerced the neighbour into calling me, as she's tried similar things with me in the past, the neighbour says she misses my family terribly since we moved, but my friend has steadfastly avoided all my suggestions about keeping in touch via the internet. She's not a daft woman, and it's well within her capabilities to get online, she even has an internet packge, she just won't do it. I'm not about to do a seven hour drive to prove I 'love' her.... I'll try and call her back, but she's never up normal hours, which makes it really difficult to maintain contact. Thoughts?

  • Good Morning,
Dull and gloomy here today with the very stronge possibilty of Rain.
First and foremost i want to say a Huge Thank You to everyone for thier virtual Hugs and Good Luck wishes yesterday it meant such a lot to me.
Basically the situation is totally my fault and i accept this. I fell behind with CT last month and had made a arrangement to catch up and because i forgot to pay in Jan they have deemed that i broke the arrangement. Hence the fact that they have jumped on it
and sent my VISITOR. the total i owe is 477.28 which in the bigger scene of things with other people i suppose is not to bad.
After speaking to my VISITOR via phone ( sorry can't cope with thier real name) He has agreed that the min payment pm would be £89. and as i was having to pay £151 pm to the council (That was crippling us) this is affordable and a little better than the council figure. I will still be able to pay extra to clear quicker on the OS pay day months hopefully we will clear this asap possibly a month after the new years starts. I have a reasonable stocked freezer and cupboard so that will help a lot
I made numerous phone calls yesterday and we are claiming everything we would be entitled to which i thought was the case.
Regarding Car my OH's has been moved although i think it would cost more to recover than they would be able to sell it for!
I do have a car but that is safe as its on Mobility- DLA isn't due for renewal till July so at least i have till then to sort things out .
The OH has been made redundant twice in the last 4yrs hence the poor wage know as he has only ever claimed JS for 1 week as he prefers to work even if its for a min wage ( he is no good at home gets very bored and drepressed) he has been looking for something better but as we all know thier is not a lot available at the moment. Last night he did find something via the internet and has sent a cv so although he will probably one of many to apply you have to apply to be in with a chance. I will let you know.
Again Heartfelt thanks to you all.
Well this has taken me yonk's to type without a mouse so really do need to go A** to purchase cheap new one oh and return a Chicken to A*D* as purchased Tues and fridged but phew wiffy and every penny counts

I'm just guessing that she asked her to call...as I said I'd just give her a ring, and not mention that she'd called me. Neighbour seemed to want me to tell friend that she'd spoken to me?

Anyway she did what she always did. I called her on the landline at 11am and she answered the phone, but I woken her up, and she was too tired to 'talk' and said she'll call me later. She probably will, maybe tonight or tomorrow, but it'll be at 10pm and I'll be headed off to bed as I have to get up at 6.30am. I did tell her the neighbour called, so at least she's off the hook :p

Yeah her face didn't 'fit' she'd dobbed someone in for sleeping on the job over a nightshift, and they managed to twist it around so she was on the end of a bullying disciplinary. Then she gets depressed again, and they fired her for being off sick too much.

  • Kate, its always difficult to maintain links when you change area, no matter how much you might intend to, life always gets in the way. Your friend might not know your present circumstances and only remember those you had when you lived locally to her. It is hard to refuse to help but, sometimes you have to put your family first and perhaps gently explain you can't help this time. Hope this helps Lyn.

Hi everyone...bit of a lurker to this thread but I wanted to ask a question to the buttery makers. I bought some extra whipped double cream on reduced to make some butter. But as much as I whisked it, it wouldn't make butter. It did eventually all come together, but there was no buttermilk at all and as soon as I put it under tap, it disintegrated :o

Do you think that I either should have kept whisking, but my whisk was struggling as the mixture was soooo thick,(and I was thinking that the whisk is going to blow) or, I got the wrong sort of cream as it was the very, very thick type?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello PN

I made butter from extra thick double cream (senior moment of Mr T order!) and it worked fine. Once it all comes together you have to keep going and eventually it start to give up the buttermilk.

Were you using a electric hand whisk? Unless it's got a good motor it might struggle once everything thickens up. My Kenwood was grumbling a bit! Have you got a food processor, that might work better?

Sorry it went wrong, hope you have got some more cream to try again with.

ETA - just seen you said you bought 'whipped' cream - what exactly did the pot say - you need to buy double cream or extra thick double that has not been bu88ered about with in any way.

its ok, I'll answer to anything :rotfl:

It is the latest Terry Pratchett, the title is Snuff . DS brought his HB copy out for me to read - he knows I only buy paperbacks because I read in bed and almost broke my nose once when I dozed off whilst reading a heavy book :D
