Which printer is best for cheap ink?!

Options
Hi I have an Epson at the moment which I bought because I was under the impression it was the best brand for being able to use cheap compatibles. I've had nothing but problems using them though, have tried various sellers on ebay, Tesco's own. They are either rejected or they leak/smudge inside the printer.

Printer seems to have given up the ghost now so I'm wondering what is the best brand of printer to buy? I don't use it for photos just mainly documents sometimes with colour.

I would prefer a wireless with scanner.

Any help please?

  • Currently I have a HP Deskjet D1561 (just a basic printer), I also own a HP PSC 3160 (printer, copier and scanner).

The cartridges are quite cheap £10 for the black ink cartridges and slightly more for the colour ones.

My advice would be to avoid using refilled/compatible inks as they are proven to possibly break your printer and give a lower quality.

I know in the short term real ink cartridges seem more expensive, but in the long term, the compatible ones may end up breaking your printer (as seems to be the case with your printer) which will inevitably cost you more.

Compatible ink cartridges may seem like a good idea ..... until they break your printer.

My advice - Buy real ink cartridges and save yourself the hassle.

    Hope this helps

Kodak have the cheapest original ink, not the best build quality but can get decent print's from them.

Cost about £20 for full set of ink (blank and tri-colour cartridge)

  • I've been an ardent HP fan for years and can't dispute the quality of their printers. However ink cost has drive me from them. The Canon iP4850 is PC-Pro's A-list printer partly because of cost. Look at PC-Pro's reviews and decide on the printer for you. The iP4850 for example doesn't have wireless printing which might or might not be factor for you.
  • yes i think kodak
  • I have acannon for about 5 years and have used nothing but compatible ink. £8 for 4 sets:-) gets a very occasional print head clean on the utility menu.

Brought an epson SX218 for my son and it its running compatibles fine £7.50 for 19ml fill/3 sets.

Various comments on these threads aren't that impressed by the Cannon sales pitch.

I contacted Canon days ago(via their Website) asking for info about a print-head or a current printer that can work with my 40 odd quids worth of Genuine inks - reply
Dear Mr Debit Thank you for your e-mail and for contacting Canon. Unfortunately we do not have any current range printers that take the same ink cartridge as your i965. We are sorry that we cannot help you further.
. Giving the carts to charity and printer goes to skip in sky, have to admit the reply only took 12 hours

  • Thank you all for replying. Lots of differing opinions though as always with these questions.

So I've got together a few different printers that look a good price.

Or as my current model is around 6 years old, i could try another Epson.... I like the look of the Canon but where would i get compatibles from for it? That i know won't leak everywhere or be rejected? If such a thing exists.

Asda a few months back were selling a Epson wireless that had double sided capability for about £55 i missed the offer but worth checking if some stores have stock.
(current printer is an old Epson and i always buy my compatible inks from ebay costs less than £1 a cartridge!)

Yes, but Kodak's printers are a bit rubbish. I had one and the print-head was continually failing. Have a search on the internet about them first.

I swapped it for a Canon and that has been good so far.
