If you listen closely to the blasts of certain horns it says "I'M A !!!!!!! I'M A !!!!!!!" Ive seen cars translate this into morse code with a flash of their lights too. The morse code is most effective on a bright summers day...

This is the conclusion that I came to. The incident actually took place about 6.15 pm. It would have been very dark which made her feel more vulnerable.

OP, can you give us a google maps link of the island in question?

Will try and do a google map later. It was actually the roundabout at Llandudno Junction that links to Conway and the M55 motorway.

My friend entered the roundabout from Deganwy. The first exit to her left was to Llandudno Junction. The second exit was to the motorway (and Tesco's). The third exit to Conway. The fourth exit back to Deganwy.

It is a fairly spacious roundabout with clear road markings. It can be a bit tricky especially during peak hour.
  • hmmm maybe she didn't have her lights on?

My thoughts are that your friend was taking much too long to assess that it was safe to proceed with her manouvre and probably created a queue behind her at the roundabout, section 169 of the HC suggests not to unecessarily create queues behind you, your friends has passed her test, it is now time to learn to drive (not meant in a facious way, I have seen many take a long time to proceed with their journey and still driving as if they are on a driving lesson) .

There was no queue behind her. But even if there was it would not have affected drivers in the right hand lane. The two lines of traffic move independently of each other.

I'm not sure the offender is a complete numpty or the friend is totally blameless in this situation, I'm sure many readers have experienced or been that victim, some drivers will wait for a roundabut to be clear during peak time, it will never be clear and a more aggressive approach is sometimes required, it's not as if the others on the roundabout are rallying around .

The driver in the right hand lane was unaffected by the driver in the left hand lane. Why would a driver in the right hand lane wait for the driver in the left hand lane to move off before moving off themselves. Especially since the roundabout is fairly spacious and there are two very adequate lanes to occupy.

I don't know as I was not there, I can only put myself imaginary in the position of the 'victim' and the 'assailant', I too have had to pap my horn to make folk know of my presence, or to wake them up out of a day dream, at the same time I have had folk fuming that I have ended up in front of them as they wish to travel as if they are in a funeral montage.
You did ask for thoughts and I'm just putting some variances to the equation :o
You mention it is a Motorway roundabout? Which whilst they are spacious, the Lydiate Ash roundabout Junction 4 of the M5 is a nightmare and even with many lanes and traffic lights, there are accidents there, threads have been started on here in the past I do recall :(
  • Is the entrance and exit she used marked as a double lane?.

The approach road markings are quite clear. You take the left hand lane if exiting at the first exit (Llandudno Junction) and also take the left lane if you are taking the second exit for the motorway or supermarket.

Did she stay in her lane going around the roundabout or was she straying in to his lane as many people do, that is the only reason I can see for the other driver using the horn.
The number of people who start in the left lane, then drift into the right lane on a roundabout before going off at the exit seem to be getting more and more lately

Highly unlikely, as I have said. See previous answers.
  • Without knowing the exact happenings leading up to the horn blast it's hard to tell, but apparently easy to opinionate over.
My idea would be that the horny one was either in the wrong lane or was cheekily trying to jump the queue, as he neared the roundabout he probably indicated left hoping to get back into the correct lane, your friend probably never seen the indication as she was watching the traffic leading up to and on to the roundabout. Horny man takes offence at her not letting him back in so tootled away, parp parp!!

Great new insight. You get the "Sherlock" prize.:D
