Many people who have bought digital cameras over the past couple of years may well have been given in the camera kit a rather small SD memory card (16/32MB). These were rather small to store many pictures and presumably, these cards are sitting in a draw unused, as most people will have upgraded to a larger size card.

Poundland stores have available in store an adaptor that turns SD cards into a memory stick, they work by pluging the SD card in one end and the other end has a USB plug - the adaptor is USB2. They cost £1 (Poundland).

I have a tomtom 510 which I want to back up on a spare SD card just in case the original should go haywire. Can palman or anyone else possibly guide me in detail how to do this. I would be delighted for any help. nevjaygreen@hotmail.com

I have a phone with a mini SD card in it, is that the same as the cards being discussed here? also I've heard micro SD mentioned?? just looking for clarification!

micro sd and mini sd are differnet cards. mini is half the physical size of a full sd card, micro is about 1/8 the size so make sure you buy the right one

SD (secure digital) memory cards are the little memory chips that you use in cameras, phones and MP3 players. You should get one with whatever you buy but often they're only about 256MB which can soon get full after a few pics and video clips.




Why are these so cheap?

These are the slightly older, slower types of cards, which work well for everyday use for cameras and MP3 players but if you want something a bit more high tech with the ability to take fast-sequence photos or high quality videos you might need to go for more expensive cards.

Sorry Martin but there is a better deal at Crucial for 1 or 2 Gbyte SD cards. Amazon cheat with the price since they quote the non VAT value in the Ad. Only after you have ordered it do you get the full story. I just got a 2Gbyte SD for £11.47 delivered from Crucial. The equivalent from Amazon was £8.22+2.75 +VAT= £12.89 delivered!

Or you could get the £9.99 2gb SD card from www.dvd.co.uk

To all photographers...

Several pros I know will never use a card bigger than 1Gb. Some stick even to 512Mb. Their reasoning behind this is that there is less data to lose if the card corrupts/gets damaged/ends up in the quay(I've seen it happen!).

Further to this, one I know who isn't a sports photograher and therefore doesn't need the speed, buys the super cheap 1Gb ones, carries 6-8 at a time (depends how long he's out for) and then replaces them every six months. The old ones get sold onto friends for next to nothing. He hasn't yet lost any data, and it's less painful to ship them off cheap when you've used them a while.

So, before you all go buying the 2Gb or even 4Gb cards, bear that in mind!
