What's the deal?

The price of SD memory cards are dropping rapidly. These are the storage cards you put in mobile phones, cameras and MP3 players to expand your memory capacity so you can have more pictures/songs/videos on them.

The Current Cheapest

Amazon is offering these cards dirt cheap (though if you spot it cheaper, please report it below). Of course as it's Amazon, that means you have to pay delivery of £2.75+VAT unless your order totals over £15.

Web retailer DVD.co.uk offers free delivery on all UK orders, which makes these Kingston models the cheapest if you just want the card.

On Amazon there are a number of third party suppliers selling cards for £2.99. Yet this isn't part of Amazon's 'spend over £15 and get free delivery' offer, and the delivery can be very pricey (the linked card is £4.50 per item, and is subject to change), so always check before you buy.

SD (secure digital) memory cards are the little memory chips that you use in cameras, phones and MP3 players. You should get one with whatever you buy but often they're only about 256MB which can soon get full after a few pics and video clips.




Why are these so cheap?

These are the slightly older, slower types of cards, which work well for everyday use for cameras and MP3 players but if you want something a bit more high tech with the ability to take fast-sequence photos or high quality videos you might need to go for more expensive cards.

Also because the newer ones with 4 & 8GB capacity are coming out (cheaply as well) although they aren't compatible with the older electrical devices.

i agree, i bought one recently, for my pda, only takes the older ones

in need a xd card one now, again they've have dropped down for the same reasons. but there not as cheap.

ironically i bought a 512mb card for my sons phone for £5 yet the xd card is at least double that

Just to clarify, as far as I know, its not the speed that the older devices cannot handle, its the actual size of memory card (my Canon A540, recommend largest card size is 2Gb).

However, depends on what you're using it for, these slower cards can be fine.

Particularly with digital cameras (I don't know about PDAs and phones, etc), there is very little difference in performance with the higher speed cards - you'll still get that shutter lag, delay for next photo, etc on many new cameras regardless of what memory card you use as other factors come into play, such as processing, battery power, flash recycle times.

So don't be put off, albeit a true and fair comment by Palman, that these are slow, as with the exception of lightning fast equipment, a lot of the time, you'd hardly notice, if at all.

They're a great price for a decent capacity, and well worth considering for a many people.

yes you are right, they don't like the bigger sizes, however the faster speeds are not used it simply writes at the slower speed. So you can use a faster card but it just wont work at a fast speed, so pointless paying more money for one.

yes you are right, they don't like the bigger sizes, however the faster speeds are not used it simply writes at the slower speed. So you can use a faster card but it just wont work at a fast speed, so pointless paying more money for one.

Will these cards (older ones) work on the old TomTom go as I would like to download some euro maps from the tomtom website but the card that came with the tomtom originally about 2 years ago is too small to hold both the UK maps and the euro maps.

Should I just risk it and buy the one for 1G am the euro maps is a bit over 800KB?

i just read the tom tom go 500 will go up a 4gb card, so a 1gb will be fine
