  • I can't find anything in any of the links etc about the childcare element and the new changes? will you automatically get it if you are doing a combined 24 hours? or will both people working (if they are) need to do 16 hours each? Mega confusing this lol!! x

    I haven't heard about a cap on benefits for a certain number of children. No doubt it will be decried as 'racist' as certain groups tend to have larger families for cultural reasons.

    However, you can model the state benefits that lady with 7 children receives on the Turn2us online benefit calculator. Come back and tell us.

    I know a lone parent with 2 children receives £200 per week, plus full CT and almost all or most of the rent paid with HB, and can receive child maintenance on top from the non-resident parent without it impacting their benefits.

I think the costs of childcare for fulltime work was making it impossible for them to work over 20 hours. WFTC was giving the equivilent of a full time wage in some cases once added to their 16 hours pay.

    That's my friend's experience of tax credits - good for the lone parent so long as they stick rigidly to the 16 hours limit otherwise the withdrawal rate in terms of loss of benefits and child care costs wipes out any extra effort.

    Bad for the company struggling during peak periods or staff sickness as the team members won't work overtime. That's according to my pal who works as a manager in a big finance company.

    Plus of course, why work for 35 hours, perhaps have 5 hours commuting and travel expenses, and not see the babby for that extra time if you can get pretty close to that income by halving the time you spend away from home!

    Out of curosity (in case i decide to bury my husband under the patio ) what would happen in my case im only contracted for 15hrs but the minimum i've ever worked for the last 2 years is 30+hrs a week, could i claim WT or not ? is it done on contracted hours or average hours in the last 12 months, i dare say a lot of supermarket worker will come a cropper on this one

    How do they manage that? As a single parent with 2 children I get no where near £200 tax credits and only a small amount of HB.

    i was going ask the same

    contracted to 20 hrs a week but work more like 30+ with over time
    but have mentioned this to my employers to pls change this to say a 24 hr a week contract but they wont - they dont wanna have to pay more then 20 hrs when on hols or off sick

    what would be the rules then can it be an average or is it on the written contract ?

    The actual legislation just says it is the hours you 'normally' work. So in the example you give where you are contracted to 20 but work 30 then it would be 30.

    There are no averaging rules for calculating hours unfortunately.

    The £200 is IS/CB/CTC?

    And that gives the full the amount of HB/CTB?
