try following the tweaks and see if it still chunters, the commit figures posted suggest that at the time you looked, no swapping was going on!!

That's correct, at the time I posted, the pc was working "normally". I'll try and work my way through the tweaks over the weekend.
Thanks everyone for the continuing help.Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0 -
I've followed closed clean-up instructions as best as I can. I can't figure out how to disable ctfmon though - option to turn off advanced text services isn't there.
Edit : Just worked out how to disable the above - now done.
I made the changes yesterday and, so far, chuntering seems to have virtually stopped
I'd appreciate views on the following compared to my previous submissions.
Thanks again all.

Just a thought when skimming through this thread- when Mimijane asks "time for a new hard disc" is she actually meaning "time for a new computer base unit" because I know many people that call the actual computer box a hard drive rather than actually meaning just the hard drive inside?!
So I have a feeling this isn't about the hard disc drive itself but the overal performance of the complete computer.
So basically it's - "I have a slow running computer" thread I imagine.

Did you tell us the model or Service Tag of your machine?0

uninstall this

Click the java icon in control panel, advanced, misc - untick java quick starter, and untick place icon in system tray. Disable error reporting - control panel, system, advanced, error reporting, select disable error reporting and leave notify me when a critical error occurs ticked.
uninstall spybot
stop these running at startup using msconfig - if you need to run them, create an icon and use as required

if you dont use bluetooth often, you could set the bluetooth service to manual along with the crypkey (the latter may stop a piece of software running until re-enabled)
then reboot and note the commit charge before launching any programs, and post it. (it should be under 200,000)
have you installed/changed your dns servers to tidydns?!!

Service Pack is the OS software. Dell Service Tag is the 7 digit number on a little sticker on the case.
I'm guessing it's a Dell Dimension?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
It's a Dell Home Edition Service Pack 3, Version 2002, Pentium (R) D, CPU 2.66GHz. Hope this helps ...
Let's go with the Service Tag then.0
