5 yr old Dell - is it time for a new hard disc?

Hi all,
Just a little advice please ...
I've been running XP on my Dell desktop for 5 years and it's (fairly) recently started "chuntering" for about 15 mins. every hour or so, when it becomes so slow I can do very little on it. I've made no changes re. anti-virus, etc. for a long time (Avast).
I have 512mb of RAM and regularly do competitions on this website - this problem is now really slowing me down.
I appreciate the machine is now fairly old and could be full of junk (though I regularly clean it).
Do you suggest I try more RAM, or maybe it's time for a new hard-disk and upgrade to Windows 7?
I really only use the machine for emails, general surfing and competitions.
Any advice would be great.

Install more RAM
Check to see if your AV is running a scan every hour.
Start Task Manager and monitor activity during the 'chuntering' time to see if there's any clues

I've checked the AV - there is no scan running every hour from what I can see (I've set it to weekly in the past). This is a relatively "new" problem. IE runs very high during the chuntering period - I've checked this a number of times using Task Master. I defrag regularly.Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0 -

Hi,
have you run "chkdsk /r" on your hard drive? (do thru command prompt), it will report (and attempt to repair) if there are issues with your drive.
I would suggest for an older machine you don't upgrade your operating system as the processor will struggle more.
More RAM is always handy but sounds like the issue is your hard drive. Suggest you back up NOW!
you can probably replace your drive for £20 or so off fleabay, they're very simple to change.
hope this helps!Friendly greeting!0 -
Thanks, I'm not exactly computer literate, so will struggle with most things and will need to get someone in to add RAM/replace hard drive, etc. I do back up regularly (not that there's much to back up!), so not a problem.
Is chkdsk/r easy to run?Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0 -
yep, go Start --> Run... and type in CMD, you can then enter "chkdsk c: /r". If doesn't run, you need to run as administrator - in this case, find the program itself (usually in C:\WINDOWS\system32), right-click and choose "run as administrator". You will prob have to restart your computer as it can't run on the operating system drive whilst logged in to windows.Friendly greeting!0

and, replacing the hard drive (ah, see its a desktop, a little more fiddly but you could find a tutorial on youtube no doubt ;-))Friendly greeting!0
