Reasonable travel time?

The worst commute I've ever endured was Barnsley to Huddersfield 6 days a week, couldn't afford the quick option (train) so was at the mercy of Yorkshire Traction and the strange and wonderful timetables they never ruddy stuck to. Standing freezing my behind off pre-dawn in Barnsley bus station to get to the next town an hour & a half before my shift began because the next bus would if it actually showed up get me there late.
I can clearly remember waking up one morning to a couple of foot of snow on my side of the Pennines and nothing be it bus, train or even the insane taxi drivers going anywhere. Called into work to say I can't come in & got a new one torn by the boss as not a single flake had touched down on their side of the hill. Was in line for proper dressing down til he saw the local news that night and apologized for calling me a liar . . .
My commute as from Monday ? 10 minutes round the corner - on foot - bliss !DFW NERD# 1175Proud Member of Sealed Pot Challenge #5 ~ 1479 cashless_wonder~*DEBT FREE & LOVING IT*~

Well it could be reasonable to the Job Centre which is 90 minutes each way by whichever means of transport you use.
...and that is totally UNreasonable.
The only way I would spend 3 hours of my leisuretime getting to and from work each day would be for a career (I did say "career" - not "job") that I found really fulfilling, useful and well-paid. It would HAVE to match that description - otherwise I would be spending a lot of money on travelling out of a salary that wasnt adequate to do that and live AND I would be giving up "having a life" for the sake of earning an income. The only way one can give up "having a life" for the sake of a job is if the job IS one's Life (ie one finds it really fulfilling and satisfying).
For the sake of a NMW to "standard" paylevel bogstandard job - I wouldnt even consider such a long commute. That level of job HAS to be conveniently located - so that it fits around one's Life and doesnt take too much money to cover the cost of getting to/from it.0 -
Mine is 90 mins each way. Public transport (train and then tube). I've been doing it for 10 years now and it's not a problem (apart from the £4000pa cost)."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

Ha ha, the joys of self-employmentMy commute is all of about 5-10 seconds from bed to pc, oh the joys of not having to travel anymore,
. The downside is that you spend far too much time being distracted by MSE amongst other sites, but also that you can vegetate for hours...not very healthy!
I disagree, a 90-min commute to the Job Centre is not unreasonable and I would imagine you could use that time to do some reading (the time cited must be for public transport). It's not as if it's a daily activity and tbh if you don't have a job and need one, is there a better use of your time?...and that is totally UNreasonable.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

There seems to be a divide in attitudes...
On one hand "when you're choosing your next job, ensure that it's either commutable to you or that you move to it".
On the other "I'll only get a job if it's commutable".

it's not a 90 minute commute to the job centre. It's a 90 minute commute is ACCEPTABLE to the job centre. so it is a daily thing as you're commuting to work not to the job centre.
90 minutes is acceptable if you're working; but if you're on JSA and eexpected to commute for a large distance before you get paid... then it moves the goal posts a bit. If you've been on £60 a week JSA, how are you supposed to pay travel expenses to get to work for (up to) two months before you get a full wage?0 -

My job is either a 15-20 minutes drive or 40-60 minutes on the bus, for me that's reasonable but I wouldn't want to do much more - maybe for more money I'd be happy to drive 45 mins
