Nothing wrong with cycling at all. Anything up to 10 miles each way is a comfortable commute for most people who are used to it; some commute 20 miles and even more each way. And cycling IS all-weather, you just use a decent gore jacket.

Best way by far - you are largely unaffected by traffic asnd know you can rely on a set time frame to get to work regardless.

My jobs range from 5 mins away to 1.5 hours away but I don't commute as such as I work for myself all over Scotland, but 1 hour is usually the most I would have considered in the past.

How long did you do that for?

I've had 2 jobs with decent travel and both of them were my two longest jobs. I don't think that is a coincidence.

I did it for 5 years in total. Initially it was one bus and a pretty direct route, so 40 mins. Of course that bus was canned. So I had to take 2 buses and a VERY indirect route - 1.5 hours each way. It was great for catching up on reading or snoozing but rubbish for fitting in a life around it.

  • Anything up to an hour. although I do 35 miles in 40 minutes at the minute; but that's only because i'm starting at 7am, if i started at 9am it'd take an extra half an hour. A previous contract took me 35 minutes to do 4 miles.
  • I used to commute from Bournemouth to Waterloo (1Hr.38min) before Stagecoach Ralbuses started to wreck the service. On the well designed wessex units you were able to work along with the fact that there were only two stops. Now its a noisy railbus stopping everywhere. The service is now slower than the prewar Bournemouth Limited (1hr 50min).

Now I moved to March in the Fens, I'am only a hour from London with one change.
  • Used to commute 90 mins into work and the same back out. Given that up for a 30 second stroll up the stairs to my office, bliss!

    I catch the 5:59 and get in at 7:07am = 1hr 8mins.

On the way home, I catch a different bus at 3:15 - this catches up with my "real" bus that left at 3pm, at the next big town (usually) so I get home about 4:15pm - so that's an hour, but if they miss each other I have a half hour wait for the next one.

It's not so bad, I try to sleep on the morning bus and I read on the homeward journey.

I am lucky they let us start any time after 7 so I leave home with everyone asleep (they don't miss me) and get home about 20 minutes after my son is home from school.

I have had journeys averaging from 30 mins-2 hours throughout my career. I think an hour seems about average for most people I know.
Commuting 4 hours a day nearly killed me. My health definitely suffered and I had no social life by the end of it. The only good thing was that I became exceptionally well-read as I got through so many books!

I have a 10-12 minute drive each way, for my hourly wage though i certainly would'nt travel any further as its not worth the diesel costs.....

Most of my commutes have been between 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 hours each way, I consider that fairly normal.

I am now self employed and one of the places I often work has a near 3 hour commute each way, so I try to only do that a few times a month.
