^^ I agree with this. I've been looking for a word to describe people who purposely act thick. Who can get to adulthood and not know the difference between bought/brought  Now I shall call them "inverted snobs" :T

What about 'Just call me Dave, I'm off to hug a hoodie'?;)

Another annoying one for me is when people add "me" to everything eg "I like that me" or "I'm going home me" grrrrrrrrr.

I loathe using me/mine etc randomly as in 'I'll get me coat' or 'They're coming over to mine for dinner'. Or what about 'I'd rather come to yours'.

Similar here in Wales. I'm English and my 20 year old son was born and lived in England until he was 10. He came to ask me where something was recently by saying "Where's it to?"

I had no idea what he was saying because it made no sense to me! It was like he was speaking gobbledegook.
I said "Pardon?" and he repeated it. Still not understanding I looked at my husband (he's Welsh) and he explained that it means "Where is it".

Still doesn't make sense to me! :rotfl:

Shame on you gigervamp, if you've lived in Wales for 10 years, you should have known the answer was 'It's over by 'ere!':D

    and what about -

    somethink

This gets my goat everything time, but when it's your MIL et al, you can't exactly put them right, can you???!!

She also says Injuns to mean Indians or Asian people, but this really gets me quite incensed as she's the kinda person who likes to repeat herself often and forgets that we have listened to her same xxxt on every visit we have from her.

Has anyone dealt with misinformed/uneducated family members before about their vocabulary or do they suffer in silence/brush it aside?

Get annoyed by people saying bur-gal-ry instead burg-lary. How sad is that. :o

I'm really surprised that we southerners are being blamed for this poor grammar! I live in the SE, and I don't use any of the examples given here. I'm sure that some southerners might, but that is because they are poorly educated, but not because they are southerners! I'm sure that lack of education is equally prevalent in the North as the South, and there must be people making these errors all around the country...

    :T

Or they have moved down south from up north :D

Mine too it really annoys me it just so lazy, it makes me  when I hear it!

An old colleague of mine used to pronounce it 'itch' used to bug me, she is now a deputy head teacher, I wonder if she was ever corrected when she was doing her teacher training?!

:rotfl::rotfl:I live just a few miles away from 'the broch' and rarely understand what they are saying (and I've lived here all my life but parents aren't locals, not sure if that makes a difference), when I was at college one of the girls said she was getting the pinters in, she meant the painters! Oh and she was going tenting for her holidays I mean wth!!!! :rotfl:

Bad grammer and bad spelling really bugs me!

Do you mean bad grammar?! :)
  • Facebook status updated I have seen from my (London based) cousins who I've now hidden from my feed:

    - I'm so board someone plz amuse me
    - I'm off down the pub if any of youse wanna join
    - I brought alot of new stuff down (insert town here) today lolz

The killer for me though, was my friend had a status where her phone had autocorrected a word when she'd typed it. Although the autocorrected word made no sense in the context of the sentence, you could make out what she was trying to say. Her mum, a teacher, is also on facebook and commented "You're spelling is awful - worse than some of the kid's at school". Red rag to a bull. I corrected her. Oops - thankfully my friend saw the funny side!

i saw a cracker a few months ago.
person 1 - blah blah blah
    person 2 - OMG i'm so gel
person 3 - lol, you mean jel as in jellous

"That's no reason to cry. One cries because one is sad. For example, I cry because others are stupid, and that makes me sad."
  • Argh, this stuff is all so annoying.

This is how I want to react when I see brought instead of bought:

My ex nan-in-law (from Sheffield) was always pronouncing things incorrectly such as: pizza = pee zza, duvet = do vet etc etc. She was forever saying DD1 was weary of her...err I think you mean wary! Ex FIL and ex also pronounced Renault as Renult, used to make me cringe in public cos everyone knows the French don't pronunce the 'lt' bit...don't they??

A friend's OH says, "I'm gonna get me a shower" when he comes in from work. I sometimes feel like asking him why he thinks just before tea is a good time to pop out to B&Q for bathroom accessories.

His MIL apparently embarrassed them all once by ordering a ham bagut in a cafe :rotfl:

So do I. I know how the French pronounce it but I don't speak French. :D Honestly, if you said 'Renau' here people would think you're pretentious. :o

My MIL says Oddie for Audi. :D
