DD2 is having her friend over to tea tonight and every time she comes DD asks if I will do meatballs as it is her friend's favourite. Last time I did them the kid said she didn't like them because they didn't have the same sauce on them as she gets in Ikea. I have made some for tonight and was going to have a go at replicating the Ikea sauce, but it is so long since I went to Ikea that I can't remember what it tastes like or how I might make it. Has anyone any ideas? I seem to remember it was berry flavoured gravy but I might be wrong (by the time we get round Ikea and go to the cafe I have generally lost the will to live:rolleyes: )

Haven't tried them but just searched on google and found the websiteworking on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
I know the sauce you mean. It's cranberry - maybe you could get some cranberry sauce and warm it through, maybe diluting it a bit to make it more runny?0

*twit scuttles off to cupboard and returns bearing a packet mix of Ikea sauce and a jar of Ikea berries*
The berries are Lingonberries, just like cranberry sauce, but not as sweet IMHO.
The sauce is Graddsas, with an 'umlaaut' (sp) two dots over first A and a little circle thing over second A.
On the packet it is described as a cream sauce mix for meatballs.

The meatball sauce in ikea is creamy, maybe with blac pepper. You also get a dollop of lingonberry 'jam'. I am sure it must be the cream sauce she is after, the jam is defianteily an optional extra. I'd would a cream & pepper sauce 9black pepper i mean, not green or red.
All ikeas are a long way for us so its meatballs when you get there and hot dog (i know what you are tihnking but beleive me these sausages have no meat content of any kind to worry about) & cola before you set off home again. Its more imprtant that the actual shopping!....another happy bug.........sorry,blogger embracing the simple life0 -
we were at IKEA on Saturday for the first time in about 3 years. my first taste of the famous meatballs and i was quite impressed.
especially at £2.75 for 10!0 -
The meatballs are not that hard to make really
honest they are almost considered poor mans fare in scandinavia
It's our junk food! Oh and Ikea hotdogs are NOTHING compared to a Danish hotdog "med det hele" ("with everything")
Here is the best translated version I've seen execpt no-one I've ever met used veal... we used cheapest beef mince lol!
http://www.elook.org/recipes/european/27189.html
The sauce is :
15 g butter
2 spsk flour
4 dl milk or stock (depending on personal preference)
salt
fresh ground pepper
kulør (this is like a colour that you can buy - I've only ever seen this particular thing in denmark which is why our sauce is brown and the one in Ikea is creamyish)
My mum usually use the pan she's cooked the meatballs in and then deglace it with a milk and flour mix and KEEP stirring until all lumps are gone

Thanks for all your replies. I made the sauce from cream, beef stock (made from a kallo cube in a cup of boiling water), soy sauce, white pepper and a little bit of gravy salt (more for the colour). I poured it over the meatballs and the kids loved it! I will definitely make it again - even DD1 got all miffed because I didn't make any for her (she is the worlds fussiest eater and if I had offered to make her some she would have refused) after she tasted them. So thanks everyone!Jane

The Ikea Sauce I have for meatballs is creamy, and made from a packet powder (quite cheap in the Ikea shop) and cream. The main flavour as far as I can tell, is a caramellised one. Thanks for the recipe links here, as I prefer HM to packet.

I know its not much use to you now but something to look out for - Ikea have brought out a cookbook, with all their recipes in it. It's very cheap, I remember about £2.50, in the Swedish Food Hall.We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment0

We make normal gravy and add a dollop of mayonnaise because we don't usually have cream in the house but do usually have mayo.
