Alternative to waiting for iPhone 4S with Tesco

  • I was due an upgrade with o2 but instead of upgrading my phone I kept my iphone 4 and went onto a 12 month simplicity contract

600 mins + 300 mins o2-o2 calls + unlimited texts and 100 mbs daily allowance all for £13.50

I am £24 per month btter off with an extra 300 mins. I am delighted!

Yup and with that saving, you could save towards buying a sim free iphone 5 (when it comes out next year...)
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!

  • Just like you,I was in two minds but finally did exactly that, paid £599 for the 32GB obviously unlocked from Apple, sold my old phone to recoup a bit of it then switched to GiffGaff for 400 mns, unlimited texts and internet for £15/mth on 1 month rolling contract and will be saving £378 over 18 months;I can only advise, just do your own analysis and see what`s best for you also you`ll notice the small fortune you could save in the process.
GiffGaff just like Tesco also use the O2 network therefore very reliable, been using it for just over 4 weeks now and have nothing bad to say about it personally.

I would love to do that but £600 is a lot to fork out with xmas coming up ( i do have money saved though).

I kinda want a contract as i don't really want to spend £600 in one go, even though it works out cheaper. TESCO have no stock so i have ruled them out, and 3MOBILE (are really cheap) but i heard they are really !!!! in terms of signal. I don't want to take the risk of signing up with them for 24 months and having non stop problems with them.

I am on Orange, but Orange are charging £36 x 24 months, plus £200 for the handset which is a rubbish deal tbf. I am really running out of options and may have to get the SS2 :(
  • Also is it worth me getting the 4s when the 5 is coming out in june?

no, I'll just wait till hubbys decides to get the iphone 5 and I will get his iphone 4s :)

    Ah clever plan!

That's what my OH is doing.. eagerly waiting for my iphone 3gs, while I wait patiently for the 4s to arrive...

But then is it worth buying the iphone 5 when the iphone 6 will come out 355 days later...

Vicious circle.. you need to jump in at some point!

  • I'm also fed up with waiting for tesco stock and thinking of buying a 4s direct from apple and getting the £12.50 sim only deal. Apple are quoting 1 to 2 weeks despatch for the phone. Question is, do I sign up for the tesco sim only deal first then wait for the phone to arrive, or vice versa?

I ordered the SIM first....iPhone stocks may be low but they will get better - the SIM is a special deal so almost guaranteed not to last.

Also I ordered the phone from Apple Store website but I ended up cancelling the order and just buying from my local Apple Store shop cos they had LOADS.

One thing to watch out with buying the 4s handset from Tesco is that I saw something about them refusing to unlock it for the full length of the contract. This could be a BIG problem if you ever travel outside the UK as your only option will be extortionate roaming fees rather than a cheap local sim. Orange make you wait 3 months which is annoying, but tesco take the biscuit here.

But the iphone 4s takes a micro sim, so you would be looking for a cheap local micro sim. Not that easy to find I would guesss.

They have a micro-SIM only deal for £12.50 a month for 500 mins, 5000 texts and 1GB of data. Is listed as a special offer so no idea how long it will last.

I've ordered the deal and then order an iPhone 4S straight from Apple.

    12x £12.50 = £150
    +
    £499.00

    = £649 for phone and 12 months.

If you wait until Tesco has stock then it would cost £655 for 12 months plus phone on £35 a month tariff.

The SIM only deal is 250 mins less than the closest 4S tariff but I think I'll cope with the 8 hours call time.

That deal looks amazing, but what guarantee have you got that Tesco will carry on with a £12.50 tariff after 3 months? It could become £15...then £20.....

I'm calculating on keeping the phone for 2 years (at least for comparison purposes), and don't really put much trust in Tesco keeping the £12.50 going for that long.

  • I'm planning on getting this Tesco 3month £12.50 sim, then buy either the iPhone 4 or 4s (still undecided) from an Apple Store and get Orange to send me my PUK code on my current Orange PAYG sim to transfer my current number across.

Are there any flaws with this plan? I'm a little uneducated where it comes to phones/contracts so could do with a heads-up.

    Cheers guys!
