As you all know I gave up my nursing job to support DS fulltime with his autism, ADHD. Tourettes and all the other difficulties.....£225 a month is nowhere near my salary even for the 2 days I worked.
We are managing fine though but a new challenge is DH is now going fully self employed in 2 weeks time and although we will hopefully be better off eventually it may take a bit of doing at first.
Bitsy.....get some hens!! They are fab, we havent bought eggs since we got our 3 ladies and they don`t cost that musch to keep once you have the coop etc:D
  • The cat won`t get in a secure coop:p.....you are making excuses..I have probably put you off with the idea of having to fiddle around getting the stuck egg out of Henriettas vent:rotfl:

Now unless yiou make quite a bit of the stuff, you wont save that much money, As tesco, asda and the like do some great deals on wine.

    I beg to differ.

I have 11 demijohns, and 2 5 gallon fermenting buckets, and 6 1 gallon buckets. Even with just one gallon/5 litre bucket, I can make 6 bottles of wine for 50p a bottle, and that's for the sugar, yeast and bought in red grape juice to make the base. Adding fruit I've grown myself.

It's cheaper using free fruit from the hedgerows. My latest elderberry is absolutely fantastic. Beaujo-berry Nouveau. This one, using 5 bags of sugar and totally free fruit - giving 33 bottles, for £5. 15p a bottle. :D
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

:eek: Still gives me the shivers :p

Thing is though even with a secure coop would she be constantly prowling, wouldn't want her putting them off laying :rotfl:

What is the cost of feed, stuff to keep them healthy eg against red mites etc, how much space do they need? Don't want caged birds :o

  • Hi chums room for an old 'un.I love to make the most of what I have and have frugality running through me like a stick of rock. My DGS say 'Gran always knows where to find the best places to go in the holidays that don't cost a fortune' .(Thanks to my trusty computer and a bit of 'surfing') it is possible to think of or find outings that don't involve much cash outlay (we picnic all the time) If its a freebie place then we get the boys an ice cream.Free newspapers and local internet sites are a mine of information.

We made our own Christmas Crackers last year and they went down a storm as I got each of the boys to decorate them and write who they were for .The tiny presents I had from a Christmas Lunch I went to,everyone on the table who didn't want their 'cracker present ' gave them to me as they know I have a tribe of little grandchildren that I look after in the holidays (and the rest of the time as well so Mum and Dad can work)
Just a walk around the park with the boys and a football will soon have us hunting for bits to make decorations with. A tin of sparkly spray paint makes the ordinary stick of wood christmassy and won't break the bank. This year I have painted a bag of conkers with clear nail polish and will stick some liquid sticky glue in dots around the conkers and then some cotton wool for snow and a dash of sparkle dust a hole through the middle and hey presto a hanging ball held up by some christmas ribbon goes on the tree.An upside down empty yoghurt pot with a hole in it covered in gold foil makes a smashing bell to hang on the tree.Last year I sliced a orange up and laid it on a paper towel on the radiator to dry out then decorated it with tinsel and hung on the tree.Fortnum and Masons wanted over £8 for a bag with 7 dried out slices of orange. Its adapting what you've got and making it look good.

Hi Bitsybeans, just wanted to say I will be following your diary with interest. We are in the same boat as we have just reduced our hours to look after our ds (ASD). We have finally come to the conclusion that he is a two man job. Weirdly, the drop in income has actually given us the kick we needed. We can't afford to go overdrawn or be complacent with money anymore and for the last few months we actually have money left over for an emergency fund! We actually feel better off somehow. Good luck!
