Can working really harm your health? or is it just something people say?

Alot of my friends(and family) always say "be careful not to work too much and do yourself in" when I work alot.

Like I work 35 hours a week in my main job, do some cleaning for an old man 5 hours a week (1 hour a night monday to friday) and do agency shifts here and there. But people say "you will end up ill".

Does working really make you ill or is it just something people say. I could undertstand if I was over 50 or nearing retirment and doing this. But at 19 years old I can only see working would improve your health (self-esteem, etc)

Depends how stressful the job is, i wouldnt have thought low stressfull or non stressfull jobs would be harmful to your health. At 19 you shouldnt really worry about it unless you had any defects that would limit how much you work.
  • If you have no other responsibilities you should be fine. Maybe your friends are just concerned because they know you have previously had mental health issues. See how it goes and if you feel yourself getting ill cut right back.

My husband is 37 and did a 70 hour week last week. He hasn't had a day off for 3 weeks and is pretty much useless for anything else as a result. His brain is mashed, he can't recall anything I say to him, is too shattered to play with our son and can't sleep because his brain has been overworked to the point of exhaustion. He wouldn't dream of going off sick though.

I have anxiety and depression, yes. Working can probably trigger anxiety but I should be fine. Doesn't working help depression? like give you a new lease in life.
  • I would agree with you and encourage you as I really don't think it sounds like you are overdoing it for a single young man. I just thought that may be why your friends are concerned.

Not overdoing it at all really the maximum hours I have worked in a week is 56 hours. Which might sound alot but not that bad really seeing as mildreds husband has got 40 knocking on the door and is doing 70 hours.

Respect to your husband mildred :)

None needed. He needs a hammer round the head to make him realise that he's at risk of dying in his 40s if he carries on like this :(

Sorry cross pm-post. Well he is nearing 40 and does have a wife and child, but working long hours is really admirable. Some people cba to work at all and just plonk their !!!! on benefits.
  • I have had to work 60 hour weeks while pregnant, for weeks on end (stressful office job, but no physical demands). Very very unpleasant, but didnt make me physically sick (a bit tired, snappy and a nightmare to live with), but at 7 mo preggers, I still havent needed to take a day off. That said, I would not do it long term, but as long as you enjoy what you are doing, it shouldnt be an issue.

Some people are a bit workshy and just like to have an excuse not to work..... (ie, do your friends all work?)
