Can working really harm your health? or is it just something people say?

Mildred , I am a Company Director but I learned that there are times when you just have to 'close the door' on the business.
Weekends are usually mine , although I do the payroll and invoices on a weekend once a month and will answer the occasional urgent email on a Saturday morning. My phone is NOT avaliable over the weekend unless someone is going to be off sick on the Monday.
Same in the evening after 6pm.weekdays. anyone calls? they have to leave a message, I will pick it up but more often than not it can be dealt with the next day.
Kinda hard to offer 24 hour cover without being available 24/7

Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved.

Just be wary and listen to your body it will tell you when you need to cut back and take a break for a while, i've always worked quite physical jobs including care, up to the begining of the year was doing 50+ hours a week, im paying the price for it now with arthritis in my early 40's, Ok i have the house but was it worth it im not so sure... if i end up in a nursing home it would be sold to fund my care, where i could have never worked a day and have the state fund it for me, i've cut my hours in half this year but only dropped a 1/4 in wage as im not paying the tax &ni that i was paying. i will have paid enough for a full state pension when i get there, but more likely there wont be such a thing by the time i can retire. One day i will have no mortgage but then i still have the expense of mantaining the house, the roof will need to be redone, thing like this are wear and tear so not covered in the insurance, I wonder why owning brick's and mortar is the mecca we strive for, is it just because our parents did and their parents before did so its just a drummed in response you grow up, get married and buy a house and start a family...
Dunno. But I do happen to have loved living on my own, and paying rent happened to feel pointless, as opposed to staying and saving with my dad. I just thought one day "ill move back home" because the £380 a month in rent could of gone into savings.
Since I started working I could not imagine what it is like to be long term-unemployed. I started work a month before I turned 18. Only had a short stint (6-8 weeks) on JSA, then got a job again (two if you include agency I signed up with.
As others have said I was at my most ill with my depression whilst I was off work. I also put alot of weight on.0 -
Well...actually owning (rather than renting) a house is a lot more necessary than it was when I was younger (ie because of the high level of insecurity that tenants have these days). When I was younger tenants "called the shots". These days landlords do (with 6 month tenancies/paying for credit checks before being accepted as a tenant/etc).
So - I fully understand the wish to have one's own home.
Its "swings and roundabouts" isnt it? One can push like mad for an objective for a certain length of time - and just how long that period of time is will depend very much on the person and what they are having to give up to achieve it.
A lot of us (including me) have done it. Personally - I resented it badly and it proved more difficult than I thought it would to take up "Having a Life" again once the Big Money Push was over.
One always has to bear in mind the End Game - ie of Reclaiming Ones Life once the Big Money Push is over and done with. The only people who dont have to be so concerned are those lucky few who are doing a job/career they actually enjoy and would do by choice anyway. For the rest of us - we have to bear in mind that End Game.0 -
I just got notice and 4x times Gov statatory and that didnt last long.
In the last 11 months I have had swine flu, cellulitis (from my ankle to my hip) and ended up in a&e, a tooth out where it was only below the gum line, and now under investigation for an underactive thiyroid with a high level of TSH and a low level of thyroxine hormone in the blood count - very worrying
When I was working I was rarely ill:(
I have heard this a few times, what is government statutory? and you got 4 times the statutory amount? is it redundancy pay?.
Another thing going slightly off topic (just for a sec) if you own your house then you lose your job and you get help with mortgage insurance costs. Does the money paid for insurance go directly to your provider or in your bank (like HB does).0 -

her second job is at the week ends working from 10pm till 7am= 18 hours
dont kno how long she will keep it up for.
however shes young and fit and its her life.
op when you have had enough, just pack in one of the jobs.
That is admirable
. What is her main and weekend jobs?.
Btw sorry to be nosey but. Does she go wild and spend all this money in an "I earned it so im spending it" way or like me an "I earned it, so im reluctant to spend it because I had to work x hours to earn this".
I often think like this. If something is going to cost £50, I am like "do I really want this, as it will cost me a whole shift to pay for it)0 -
Then he needs to take a hard look at the business and maybe deligate if that is possible?mildred1978 wrote: »Kinda hard to offer 24 hour cover without being available 24/7
If this a new start up and he is a one man band at the moment ,then yes he may have to put in those kind of hours but he cannot do this forever and should build this into his business plan for the future.0 -

I have no idea as I don't own a house
I think it was £330 or £350 (can't remember) x 40 -

The only big problem with working alot of hours is taxman likes his share. Tax is a little bit high imho. Though we need to pay them and contribute to society, I do think the amount we have to pay is a bit steep.0 -

I was paid monthly - salary
you get 1 payment for each year you had been with the employer (but you have to have been with them 2 years to quailify)
I was made redudant 4 years and 11 mths in so got 4 x - wasn't even a months pay
